Allergic?

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you can all of a sudden become allergic to cats.
I have had cats all my life and lately I get all congested and sneezy when I'm around a cat for very long. I can't have a cat where I live now, but my boyfriend and I have talked marriage and we both love cats. He asked me how we could have a cat if I'm allergic to them. I told him that I would take meds or get shots because I just love kitty cats!
I also visit the Humane Society here almost every weekend. I leave there so congested and my eyes and nose run like crazy! A lady there told me that I was so dedicated to stay thru such an allergy attack! I take Zyrtec whenever I get an allergy attack.
Anyway, has anyone else become allergic to cats just all of a sudden?

I do believe it is possible to have an allergic reaction to something that previously never bothered you, whether it is a food or something you touch or breathe. Some people can eat shellfish their whole lives without a problem and then one day have a clam and go into anaphylactic shock, so I'm sure it can happen with environmental allergies as well.
I'm sure if you see your doctor you can get meds or other treatment to help you cope, and if you want a pet cat, you may want to look into one of those funny hairless kinds and there are also cats with a certain type of fur that are not so bad for allergies. If you don't mind vacuuming a LOT, you may actually be OK with a regular cat. I hope youa re able to find a remedy, it is so nice having cats around, I have seven! And three dogs LOL (we're very sick people, LOL).
