I was just wondering how you all think about the rising costs of vet care. I have been a dog breeder for about 30 years and now I am semi-retired due to health problems. I no longer breed but am still active in the showing world. As a breeder I early on used to take all my dogs to the vet for every little thing, like puppy shots, boosters, yearly check-ups etc. As the years went by and the cost started to rise I soon learned to vaccinate the puppies and adults myself and no longer did I do the yearly check-ups. I always knew when a dog was ill and when to take it to the vet. So I no longer was financing the vet's new updated offices. I was just wondering if people still pay the outrages prices and how they feel about the cost of a visit to our vets.

I only take my dogs to the vet when my auntie tells me to now. I made the mistake of taking one to the vet and my auntie gave me trouble cause she said the Emily did not need to go at that time!!!!

It certainly is a problem ,it is a shame you cannot pay a premium to an insurance company,or like you say you do quite a bit yourself and you can tell when an animals ill.The trouble is by not getting them checked it could work out more expensive in the long run, perhaps you could scale down a bit.It is the same where I live you hear people paying out hundreds on their pets sometimes giving up a holiday ,I cannot see why it costs so much like you said new offices ect.We don't have a pet because we go away so often and it is so expensive. We could always sell our caravan but we could never part with a pet if things go wrong with money, hope this helps.

Actually, a lot of companies offer pet insurance now. I'm always shocked that people think having health insurance saves them money though. On the average, you'll spend more on health insurance than you would on health care, for the average person. This is a fact. Think about it. Health insurance companies are not charities. They make money because you are paying them and most of the time you'll pay them more than they'll have to pay for you to have health care. I was uninsured for years and every few years I would need something. It might cost me $500 or even $1,000 because I don't have insurance. But now I pay almost $200 a month to have insurance. I've never spent $2,400 in one year on my medical bills. So it's really not saving me money. All insurance does is give me the peace of mind that when I go to the doctor, they'll treat me now anywhere instead of before where some places ask for upfront payment and run your credit to make sure you can pay. All while you're sitting in the waiting room thinking you're going to die for 5 hours.

Considering how much human health care is, I don't think vet costs are outrageous. However, I don't take my pets in for yearly exams. They go in when they are ill because I am confident I could spot illness before the vet could at a yearly exam anyway. I weigh my pets weekly and watch for any problems. I've been doing rescue for quite awhile now so having so many animals come through my home has really made me learn how to do a lot of things on my own. I can do vaccinations (but I don't have any pets that need vaccinations), meds, subQ fluids, etc. here at home.
