I don't know, a lot of times the things that really spark conversations are completely random things that you don't think will lead into anything. If you know the person well enough to talk about the past, then I suggest talking about memories. Nothing brings people closer than nostalgia. You might find a lot of things that you have in common, or just things to talk about. My bf and I spend hours at night just remembering things about our childhoods and schools. Granted he's not a new person, but I still think that might work. Good luck!

i always begin with the basics...
are you married? kids? what do you do for fun in your spare time?
that kind of thing... if those don't work the person prolly don't want to talk, or meet a new person

Ask them about their job and then as penetrating questions about it... even if it's just being a waiter. You can pretend you know nothing about... or... if you do... you can talk about your experiences as well.

How about, " Hey how are ya doing today?" "What have u been up too?" "Want to hang out tonight and see a movie?"
"I like that shirt?"
i think girls are not that complicated, stop being nervous and just be yourself....

talk about each other's interests, hobbies, etc. once you find out about his/her interests and/or hobbies, compare em to yours in order to find some common ground. once you've done that then you can talk about what interests you both in more depth and detail
