It was so difficult for Michelle's Mama to decide to move to the White House

Understand that Michelle's mother has been taking care of the children for a very long time, and yet it was so difficult for her to decide to move to the White House. Which was more difficult to accept, having all her meals prepared, or having her private toilet cleaned or would it be getting that daily pedicure or having someone say, "yes, maam"...? Or would it be telling others what to do? I don't know, but I will say that is a tall order. However, being the mother of Michelle Obama, I know she must have the strength of about 3 women. She can pull this off. And the kids will be in very good hands. Each time someone asks Michelle what she will be doing once she gets to the White House, she says--I am going to be a mother. With Michelle being a mother, and Michelle's mother being mother and the children going to the best school in D.C., the question is, how much will it cost the taxpayers to keep Michelle's mama at the White house?

It is nice that she wants this.. But, I feel that Michelle should start being more of a mom to her kids, instead of letting her mom do her job.. I understand that her mom loves her and her kids so much.. But, the White House is a big step.. I think that if her mom is comfortable living where she is at, then she should stay.. She could still visit her family... But, to live in the White House may be a bit out of ordinary for her.. If she wants to live there, despite Michelle's plea, then she should take up the offer.

I would love to have the opportunity to live in the white house.

Probably cheaper than hiring a nanny. I find it funny that Michelle Obama talks much about mothering but rather leaves the real mothering to her mom. People have criticized Sarah Palin for leaving her kids behind to go campaigning, for being a working mom, for having a pregnant teenager (obviously didn't pay attention, yeah right!) ... nobody every criticized Michelle Obama for being on the campaign trail for her husband, for being a working mom... and we don't know yet how their kids will behave as teenagers, lol...
Whatever! Nothing is going to change anyway.

You have a good point. And really the Palin children were with their Mom and Dad, in the bus, on the campaign trail, while the Obama kids were more often left at home. Yet, they criticize Palin and praise Michelle

Which leads to the question...how much time have Palin's kids missed from school in order to attend events with their mom prior to and following her nomination? Both Barack and Michele Obama commented more than once during the campaign that their daughters were at home because school had started. Learning trumps campaigning when it comes to children in my book.

I am sure they will give her money for being an unofficial nanny. They will not fall it that. As for kidnapping, I wonder if Laura Bush's mother had secret service standing outside her door. I think not.

She would have Secret Service protection if she stayed in Chicago, which would cost the taxpayers more. As the mother-in-law of a President, she's a potential target of kidnapping.

Sounds to me like they've always had a "built-in babysitter" and have been able to do whatever they want whenever they want because Granny was always there to take care of the kids. She can't have any idea what most mothers go through working and caring for a family - she's always had her mother to do it for her.
I see no "strength" in the Obamas - I see manipulation of others and taking advantage of others for their own benefit.

It is still, however, for their convenience for her to move to the White House.

Sorry, but your are incorrect. Michelle's mother has been working in the banking industry until recently. Actually, she just retired from her job this year at the age of 71. She must have enjoyed working or needed to continue to work since she could have retire six years ago.
Therefore, Michelle's mother has not always been available to take care of the children. I am sure she was tired after a long day at the bank and perhaps spent many evening and weekends at her own home.

Hmmm.... well, I don't know how much it will cost the taxpayers (nor do I really care because it's really not on my top ten issues in life), and I'm not in a position to judge Michelle Obama on her parenting decisions.

As my civic duty I will reluctanly agree to move into the whitehouse and monitor the situation to make sure that Micelles mother is not simply taking advantage of the situation. Of course I will need some extra considerations given the extreme sacrifice that I would be making, but I think it is not unreasonable for me to do this. I have filled out the official job application with the Obama people and hope to be moving in prior to the Obamas so I can be witness to the whole process.

That is just the kind of person we need in the White House. Let me know how it works out, but don't expect to have red beets for four years. They do not like red beets....not even with green eggs and ham.

Isn't this the truth...and yet, we can see that most of the time Michelle picked out her own clothing...costly mistakes.

It is my guess that the Democrats did the same for the Obamas and their family as well - it just get media coverage because the media wasn't going to "spill the beans" on the Obamas.

Why would anyone think moving to the White House would be an easy decision for any 71 year old? I doubt this old woman is used to have people wait on her and that comes with the territory if you're living in that building but she also loves her daughter and her granddaughters so I really don't envy her having to make that choice. As far as it costing the taxpayers, I don't believe that she'll eat that much and there's plenty of room. By the way, although this will be the first time that three generations have lived in the White House, she's not the first "First Mom" to live there. There have been a few others.

Spall, don't you know this woman couldn't possibly lover her daughter or her granddaughters, she's a DEMOCRAT and therefore only out to steal from the taxpayers. The fact that making such a major move is a very big deal for someone of her age was never considered by those who had to find yet one more thing to bash the Obamas for.

Glad you pointed that out, spall. They didn't make it clear in the article, but it's NOT the first time that a mother in law to the President has lived in the White House.

I certainly hope this stops eventually. Nitpicking like this is counterproductive to the unity that this country needs. I saw a comment about Grandma needing Secret Service protection...like the White House is going to have to hire additonal agents because she'll be living there...when in reality she would be provided with protection if she stayed in Chicago, which would have cost the taxpayers more.

Change is never easy, especially when you're used to a certain way of life for so many years so it's brave of Michelle Obama's mother to consider living in the white house ... she may help keep the kids well-grounded despite their new status .. at least that's what we're hoping for

I think they should stop making a big deal over Michelle's mother moving into the white house it's their discussion so let them make it. No ones complaining about all the other people that get to stay in The White House. At least she's family and she helps out with the kids that way they want have to leave their kids alone with strangers. They shouldn't leave their kids with a nanny to many children and dying at the hands of nannies or other strange so-called babysitters. So let them keep their kids with someone they love and trust.
