Hard drive failing?

Around 2 weeks ago I notices that my hard drive had started to fail and now I finally had some time to buy a new one and to copy all the important files from my old HDD to the new one. Actually this was the first time that one of my HDD's started to fail. So I was wondering, how many of you have had this problem? And have you had it more than once? I was actually a bit shocked when I found out that my HDD was failing but considering how long I have had it I am assuming that it is more or less normal. But I hope that none of my other HDDs will fail anytime soon because the computer case I have isn't a regular case. And opening it up only to change a HDD took me around 1 hour. Ok, I don't do this that often but the case was really starting to get on my nerves. It looks great but opening it and closing it takes so long. The probably worst thing was that I am barely using this computer and only did this to make sure that I don't loose my important files from the hard drive.

Harddisk are not made to last long. This is due to it operation of the harddisk in a computer system. The harddisk disc drums rotate at high speed to increase the efficiency of reading and writing of data. Rotating at ie 7200rpm will increase wear and tear due to friction. Inaddition, rotating at such speed generates a lot of heat and is not good for electronic components. People who are active torrent downloaders will see the lifespan of their harddisk relatively shorter. Other than cleaning, scanning and defrag your drives, you can prolong the lifespan of your harddisk by adding HDD cooler to dispate the heat or set your computer to turn off the harddisk if left idle for a given time.

Oh, right. I totally forgot about fans for the HDD's. Thanks for reminding me. I will keep that in mind.

I think it depends on the quality of the drive and how much it is used. I've never had a hard drive go bad and I've been using this one for around 6 years I would say. It's a Maxtor and I've never had a problem with it.

I never had a problem with my hard disk.I every time maintain my hard disk by scanning for errors and defragmenting it.It makes my computer work faster. Also i am at peace of mind that i don't lose important files.

I have a computer hard drive replaced 3 times, may be the reasom for the quality of the hard disk, the computer itself may also be compatibility problems ,or caused by improper operation, each time the hard drive broken,a lof of the above documents, pictures are lost.

A hard drive's life span is only about 5 years that's according to my observation. Especially those being used quite often. When your drive is nearing that age try to backup your files 'coz any day your drive might fail. Try using software like Norton Ghost to create a backup image of your drive. You'll never know when your drive might fail.
