I look at my grandson now just 19 months old and wonder how anyone could hurt such a beautiful child. I would never think of hurting this special little boy. He is a joy to his family and to protect him and keep him safe is our primary goal. Yet, for many children abuse is a daily routine and many little lives are lost as a result.
I have been working in the field of child abuse for many years, and it continues to be one of the worst of all crimes in my eyes. I just can't help being touched by every story I hear. One that continues to stick in my mind is the one about 22 month old Madison Ann Cundiff. If there is ever a story which will get to the heart of anyone who cares about children; it is this one.
Madi was being watched by her dad's girlfriend who killed her by shaking her to death. She was 22 months old and on June 27, 2002 she was dead. For 3 years and 7 months, her grandmother and her family fought for justice. Finally, on December 3, 2007, the trial of the woman who killed this little girl began. On December 11, 2007, the woman who killed Madi was convicted of Reckless Homicide and was given a sentence of 5 years in prison on January 7, 2008.
It hardly seems enough. There are many less harmful crimes which secure much stronger sentences.
In today's world, we here about child abuse all the time. We hear people claim they are fighting against it. We work to build cases and fight for justice, but this is the result; a slap on the wrist. What are we saying? Children are not worth more then this? (You may visit my website to learn more about it. The link is in my profile or you may click on the banner at the bottom of my profile to learn more about the campaign named for Madi.)
Do you have a story to share about child abuse? If so, please share it. This is a subject which should never stop being discussed until there are no more children hurt or killed in this manner. We must protect our children.
