I guess it depends on the way you look at it. If you are a breeder then expense really shouldn't be a problem. Taking care and nurturing the dogs, before a potential owner comes by and picks out a dog is key. I would say that if the dog is well groomed, is full bred and can be trained then the expense of the dog wouldn't matter as an owner, as if you were willing to become a trainer of a show dog, then you could make what you paid for the dog back.
Also, there's the saying "You don't pick the dog, the dog picks you!"

I think it is a matter of how far one is willing to go. Some people are dog lovers and some are just not. Most dog lovers I know look at their pet as if they are a part of their family and are willing to go to whatever extreme to care for their animal the same as they would for a family member or close friend.

For me it depends on how you look at your pet. There are people whose pet are just pet to them and nothing else. For me I could spend a lot for my dog as he's part of the family and not just a pet. He's been part of my life for over two years and nothing can compare the two years I've shared with my dog. I guess it depends on the people how they love their dog.

Well you can't really justify what is sensible spending or not. For some people, spending money for their dogs is sensible because dogs are considered as members of their family. Dogs are more than just their pet. However, there are families too that think that dogs are still animals and we don't really need to lavish them with so many things. Giving them food to eat and shelter is enough. So you really have to take these into considerations before deciding whether or not it is sensible to spend for dogs or not.
