I have a friend who knows every episode of Naruto (forgive me if I get the name wrong),a popular japanese anime. He gets very exited when talking about the episodes and knows all the character and their abilities. He knows what will powers will work against which character and it never ceases to amaze and amuse me that an adult can be so preoccupied with something that had its origins in children's entertainment.
Its the same situation with video games. Some people are so preoccupied with video games they spend hours playing them and hundreds of dollars buying them. They read tech-magazines to try and keep up with the latest gagdgets and games. They can probably tell you the history of the game, when it came out,who designed it and when it was upgraded.
In defence of these persons (gamers and anime' watchers ),they claim it is adult entertainment due to the fact that they sometimes deal with adult themes and are more violent .However,I cant seem to get it out of my mind that video games are for children and anime are basically cartoons (ooooop sorry anime people-my friend nearly bit off my head when I said that )

Hey, i think playing video games and anime aren't a childlish activity. Its created to amuse and entertain all ages, no matter how old are they. Playing video games and anime are good ways to get out any boring things, and a very good ways to learn how to solve any problems. U should try these two things. I'm sure u'll be interested after trying it.

to each his own. Anime and video games are good pressure valves to release stres and are a good recreational activity. If you put to much e,phasis on age then you'lll always be known as "that guy". adults are just as naive and reckless as children no matter what thety think only they think they have a reason to think they've experienced more than every one else in the world so they traded innsence for arrogance.

Naruto is correct. I am a fan of Hikaru. Naruto is a violent Ninja warrior protecting his village, Hikaru is now a possessed professional Go player.
Hikaru was 12 when he tried to hock his grandfather's Go board because of his low history grades, and instead got possessed by Sai, an ancient royal Go instructor who was disgraced with being accused of cheating. Current episodes are now about him (Hikaru) being a professional Go player at the age of 14.
Not all anime is childish - look up "hentai" and you see what I mean ...
The last piece of advice is only for those over 18 ... (21 in certain locations ...)

I don't feel that anime and video games are chldish, because there are a lot of video games and anime shows geared towards mature audiences. A lot of anime shows can be pretty rough, and I'm not just talking about the ones on Cartoon Network.

I don't think that. I think some video games make us can be relax. It help a lot of people. Sometimes it makes us recognize some rules which are happening in our life. Of course, if we only play video without do anything, we will be child forever.

Since there are anime for all ages it can't really be childish.
I mean you have: Shounen(male youth),Seinen(male adults) and 5 other catagories which I don't know.
And a anime for adults can't really be childish but Naruto is shounen so it's for youth but I have heard of many adults who like that show so I don't really think it's childish

Heh. Great topic and great responses. I'd like to say before anything that the majority of what I watch is anime and hardly ever watch "normal" television (especially since the take over of "reality" t.v.) and I do play a lot of video games and I don't take any offence to what ronnyb said, he's trying to learn more about it. First, if the only thing on tv was anime the question wouldn't be "do you watch anime?" but instead "which anime do you watch?" It's all a matter of perspective. In north america it definitely isn't the norm to watch anime... yet. In respect to the video games I would simply say it's the new age board games without needing more players. I never thought it childish for my parents to play board games when I was younger, not even when they had a game night just for adults. It's just an activity to relax and to experience something new. With video games it's even more entertaining now due to the fact that some add a very in depth plot so now you're basically playing an interactive movie. Now for the technical side of anime. Anime was created initially as a replacement to live action film meaning it was the mainstay of Japanese video. While most of the world had silent films, anime gave room for more creativity and allowed for the use of much more imagination considering the lack of special effects in western film. The cost to producing an anime was considerably less than producing a live film and thus made it much more available to the public as well, so initially it was intended for all audiences, not just children. ;o)

well in some way, I admire people who have a lot of knowledge about these things. But on the other hand, I think its not healthy to spend most of your quality time to these things. Maybe its good to spend some time, but not most of your time.
My boyfriend is like that, I dont think its childish, its just that, its kinda time wasting.

I don't think cartoons are the same with anime. Cartoons are created for small children and have simple concepts or story. Anime is for young adults and grown ups people. It has more complex story and some are really hard to understand. I don't think anime and video games require age to enjoy it. For me people that says this stuff are for children only have a narrow mind. It is only my opinion

I don't think anime and video games are childish. It really depends on the theme itself. I am 23 and I still playing video games, a lot of my friends still do. I'm not an anime junkie but I think anime also can be watched by adults. Same interpretations goes to comics, there are children comic and adults comics. Another example is bicycle, there are children and adults bicycles. In short, we can't generalize anime and video games are all for children because there is levels and themes to each of them that will suit certain age.

I think that it is really a double edge sword when it comes to influence of Video games and anime. Selective video game titles offers creativity and interaction between the player and the content. In the wake of new age video gaming technologies, console developers like Nintendo Wii, brought gaming interactivity to a new level. The concept is to get the whole family up their feet and into the game. Of course there are game titles targeting mature audience and parents need to be cautious about what type of games that are available to their kids. Games has also been integrated into part of education as it spurs interest in learning and under an enjoyable environment, people do absorb information better than plain text.
When it comes to Anime, it is not just simple cartoon that people are watching. There are many examples of Anime that are perceived to transmit values to viewers. Similar to the topic on video games. They may contain violence and adult contents that are not suitable for immatured viewers and a filter must be in place.

For me playing video games are not a childish thing. I'm a future teacher and I do play it too. It's one way of relaxing after a mind numbing activity in school.

It's not that childish. It's true at the start it was meant for kids but in the later years, the stories got more depth, the graphics more mature and thus, video games and anime aren't just for kids anymore.
You'd be surprised with the wide range it has for the lil kids to the much more adult ones.

I don't think that video games and similar things are childish activity, but just hobbies. I myself have played many video games over the years, and while I have matured in that time, I still prefer hanging out with a few friends and the PC rather than doing many other things which I consider less enjoyable.
However, I also think that people shouldn't get preoccupied with it. Getting obsessed can be a serious problem, financially and mentally. Obsessive people tend to spend a lot of money, as you mentioned, and become lazy and unwilling to get out of the house for some fresh air.
Every adult has a different opinion, and while I, for example, may consider an activity childish and unfulfilling, others will probably disagree.
I think video games are great for entertainment, for children and adults if they wish, but our lives shouldn't revolve around them. =P

I do not think this is true...... It needs and tests even mature brains. If its true, however, videogames are no more childish than movies. If a grown man watches pokemon does that make him childish? I have friends older than me who still watch Sesame Street (that is how it's spelt right) does that make them childish? Not at all-what you do for fun has no bearing on what is from what is not childish. Have you seen the games lately-they aren't your friendly plumber jumping on turtles I tell you that. Games-videogames, I feel is the next step in entertainment just like movies (personally I feel they have the potential to surpass movies-why sit and twidle your thumb for two hours when you can participate in the action and possibly change the course of the...uh...whatever you're playing?)

I don't think it's childish. Everybody has their right to choose their activities. It may seem childish to you, but obviously not to your friend. I've been told that I watch childish shows and that doesn't bother me. Sometimes I like watching lame humor when I'm down. It helps. I'm not an avid video game player, but I do understand why one would rather spend lots of time with games and such.

Different strokes for different folks. Some people may view video games and animated movies and cartoons as childish, but others don't. In fact, there is a growing percentage of elderly people that play video games today. Personally, I love video games and I still watch animated movies and shows that are "for kids". When I had my son, I got out of quitting cartoons because then I HAD to watch them and it is a great way to spend time with your kids and teach them new things as you talk about what you're watching. Just look at the new Tinkerbell movie. I have seen tons of reviews from older people who enjoyed it. I especially love Pixar movies, which is "for kids", and I even owned the movie Toy Story BEFORE I had a child. I think a lot of that "for kids" mindset is changing among the general population, though. This is especially true in the video game industry where games like Rock Band and Halo sell extremely well among baby boomers and young adult gamers. There are "hard-core" gamers out there, but there are also casual gamers who don't really care who made the game and when it was upgraded. I think you have to put it into perspective. There are also people out there who are cuckoo for Star Trek, which has somewhat of a nerdy and childish stigma in some social circles. Honestly, there are some anime films out there with great story lines. Check out Princess Mononoke. It's a great film and not for kids. I think you'll find that adult themes are especially prominent among anime movies because in Japan, many of these movies are not made for children. I have seen some VERY adult-oriented anime films that I would NEVER let a child watch. American animated films are a bit different, but if you watch them and pay attention, you'll see that there is something there for adults as well...jokes and references that kids wouldn't get until they were much older. Why? Because parents tend to watch these movies with their kids and I guess filmmakers don't want the parents to be bored. After all, who buys the movies for the kids?

Hmmm i dont think playing games is a childish activity..... but its a fact that inside evry adult there is a child.... Games are great for mental relaxation... provided you are not addicted to it...game addiction is a serious issue... I always prefer playing Online Games rather than pc Games like here in www.tmondo.com

I think that they are a way to relax really. Video games are good with practicing hand and eye cordination and a lot of people really need that due to driving to work every day and they also need stress relief and something to do. It's not childish.
