Who else dislikes the star rating system?

Does anybody else wish they'd just get rid of the stars and ratings? I don't see what good it does, in fact I think it's harmful. When I first came to MyLot I would really wonder about people who had a very large post count but a very low star rating. I wondered what on earth kind of stuff they talk about to give them such a low rating, and I tended not to trust people like this. I have since learned, however, that if you post in controversial areas, like politics or religion, your rating is bound to take a beating no matter who you are or what you say. So many of the people with low ratings really aren't bad or out to cause trouble or anything, they just probably posts in politics or religion a lot. I spent several weeks prior to the election posting in politics and saw my rating go from a 10 to a low 8. I stopped posting there. I know a lot of people say "I don't care about my rating", but honestly, I do. I care about everybody's rating, because most people especially who are new are probably going to react the way I did when I was new. That's why I think ratings are damaging, and I would love to suggest to MyLot that they just get rid of them altogether. It's nice to have our post counts show because that tells everybody who's been around longer or more active, but the ratings and stars I see no point in. It's like a popularity contest, and it's completely unfair that some people rate negative just because they disagree with someone's politics or religion. The other side of the coin is that I think a lot of us - I know I'm guilty of this - simply forget to rate discussions positive when we like them.
So if this were up to a vote, I'd vote to banish the rating system. Who else?

I have been saying this for days now! Maybe even weeks! The Star Ratings mean NOTHING! It is nothing but a popularity contest, I have been saying this for quite a while now! I would happily banish the Rating System if I could!

You get a star when you reach a 100 posts. I see you have reached that milestone. Next milesone is 200 points when you can use the myLot code to add smilies to your posts.

It doesn't really matter to me whether we have them or don't have them. I never really paid attention to them. So it wouldn't bother me if we got rid of them. I don't see a point in themm really, because they don't change the way I respond to others discussions, or if I reply to others or not. But I do think that some people feel hurt, or upset when their stars drop because they don't know why. So i think that if they went away with them it would be alright.

I do like the star rating system as I suppose this is your kind of reputation with this site online! I don't like the fact though that your star rating is affected when you post in contoversial areas like religion or politics as, everyone is entitled to their own opinion regardless. I tend to avoid those subject areas. Andrew

When I first got my star after 100 posts I had a 6 star. I only had 100 posts so that meant that 40 people voted negatively I think that is mean. MyLot is not a friendly place as I thought it was. Strangely I saw a poster with no star today and I should have asked how that was possible but I would have had to go through the ask friends and then pm them. They had thousands of posts so I wonder if at some time you get the option to go starless.

I see not all 100 posts would necessarily be rated. My 40 had assumed this. Maybe only 10 were rated and 4 were negative. I am still at a 6 rated star though and I have almost 400 posts now. It is not that I am posting one liners, the posts are all have spell check and I know good grammar, or at least employ good enough grammar for an online post, and they are generally on topic. I have got a couple of best response, have been told a few times I am funny and been thanked for my reply, so I think there is an underlying negativity that is never out in the open, it is done in secret. I did annoy one person though when I told her she was wrong.

i really don't bother with the ratings system and what i think of someone's response. Having a star with a certain number honestly, does not make your repsonse to someone's discussion any more or any less valid. What would make you doubt people with a lower rating? If someone with a low rating responds to you are you honestly going to take what they said less seriously? I would vote to just get rid of the ratings all together too. What's the point? In my opinion, ratings mean NOTHING.

Thats true. And this rating system has been easily abused. and been used on revenge from people who are narrow minded. Like if they got negative replies from their discussion, they would rate the member very low, and well, like you, I also care for my rating. But its unfair to get a low rating just because people rated you low for nothing.

I feel ya Philjas. You rating seem to go down if someone decides to comment negatively on your post or something they may not aggree on. I personally gave a negative rave on a comment I thought was inappropriate. After thinking it over I came to the FAIR conclusion, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Now, I never give a negative rave. They are entitled to their opinion also. Case closed.

I don't like it. I used to think it was so cool to get a star, so I always hoped to get a big blue one. But eventually my ratings decreased and I got frustrated. I figured that some people might have rated me negatively just because I wasn't scared of talking about how I really felt about certain issues. And I also saw some oldies with thousands of posts but very low star ratings. This made me realize that the star system was flawed. So now it's not that important to me anymore.

I would vote to get rid of the star. It's so silly. It really reminds me of high school, Ohh look I'm better than you because I have guess jeans and you have store brand. Replace that with stars lol

I would agree that the star ratings had some biases to mylotters here, as you have said there are those who hated a person when they think that person's opinion doesnt meet their's. People who have low ratings think they did something wrong or their opinion doesnt please anybody. Although, it feels good at times when some people did make a fair ratings still we couldnt get away with people who does make ratings bad. And one thing, some people here I see especially if they came from India or the Philippines, like myself, people rate them with a negative ratings. I would go with the vote for banishing it.

Rating are a way for trouble makers to piss other people off. I don't even rate discussions or posts anymore to be quite honest with you. I got slammed with negatives, went from 10 to 8 in a matter of hours and then trolled for about a month.... So I would vote to be rid of them too.
