What advice would you give to someone who suffers from insomnia?

I'VE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH IT FOR 4 YEARS NOW..... MY LATEST THING THAT SEEMS TO WORK IS I BOUGHT ONE OF THOSE SOUND SOOTHER MACHINES AT SHARPER IMAGE THAT HAS THINGS LIKE THUNDERSTORMS, WINDCHIMES, FLOWING BROOKS, WAVES, ETC. IT HAS SOMETHING LIKE 50 DIFFERENT SOUNDS. THE KEY HERE IS TO OCCUPY YOUR MIND WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN "I'M NOT SLEEPING....I'M NOT SLEEPING....I'M NOT SLEEPING....". TO ME, WHEN THERE'S NO WHITE NOISE IN THE ROOM, I CAN'T STAND IT! GIVE IT A TRY. IF IT DOESN'T WORK, YOU CAN RETURN IT. GOOD LUCK

Thank you. I have a real wind chime by my window and I tried those tapes a few years ago. Maybe I should dig them up again and give them another try.

sleepwell nytnyt - sleep
1 It may seem obvious, but make your bed as comfortable as possible. Experiment with what works best for you, be it a feather bed, waterbed, bed of lettuce, whatever. 2Choose a position conducive to sleep. This is often the position you find yourself waking up in. If your sleeping partner is the source of your insomnia (as he/she often is), asking him/her sleep in the garage isn't a viable option. 3Get rid of the large, luminous clock staring at you. It not only produces distracting light, it is a stressful reminder that "Hey, you aren't sleeping. Yep, that's right. Not sleeping. Loser." The act of worrying about sleep is, in itself, enough to keep you awake. 4Control the amount of light in your bedroom. Wear a sleep mask if necessary. 5When it comes to noise, many people find repetitive sounds easier to sleep through than intermittent and abrupt ones. Ear plugs or a continuous background sound such as a fan can help mask disturbing noise. Another option to consider is a white noise machine. 6 Control the thermostat. Temperature extremes, whether too hot or too cold, are no fun for the light sleeper.

Thank you, both informative and funny! I never tried a bed of lettuce, will have to try that one. I already got rid of my sleeping partner, that did help a little but wasn't the cure (I had this problem long before I got married although it wasn't as bad then).

It doesn't matter how tired I am, as soon as my head hits the pillow, I'm wide awake again.

I did that a few years ago. Their only solution was sleeping pills and I don't like that idea.

Thank you. I avoid coffee in the evenings and late afternoons. That is the hardest thing for me to do though. I used to be able to drink coffee all day and all night and still sleep like a log. The warm baths do help but I don't want to get addicted to sleeping medication and would only used them when really desperate.
