I'm just wondering if you knew he smoked before you got together with him. If smoking is such a big deal to you (which it should be) then i'm curious as to how the relationship began in the first place.
Anyway, I would place importance on the fact that not only is it harming his life but he is also harming your life. Shouldn't he care that he's reducing the life span of not only himself but of those around him, especially you--which supposedly he loves and cares for.
I would have a serious talk with him about it and see his opinion on to why he hasn't quit smoking already. Has he tried already and failed? Has he never tried at all? Those are just some discussion points to consider. Also keep in mind that the earlier he started smoking (like younger than 18) the harder it will be for him to quit.

DON'T STOP YOUR BOYFRIEND FROM SMOKING.
but...
REDUCE HIM FROM SMOKING.
smoking is bad for health especially for second hand smoker.
Not to stop him smoking but reduce.
this is because he can't stop smoke.
He can but just few months or weeks?
For my information, once he stopped and try taking smoke again,
he will take in more.
So you better ask him to reduce...

Thre first thing that comes to mind when I read your question is your boyfriend's view on this. You want to make him quit smoking, but if it is only your wish and he isn't motivated to quit smoking, you can't "make him quit", so does he want to quit? If even he is motivated it is often a hard struggle to quit smoking, but if he isn't intersted in quitting he is not likely to succeed, the wish has to come form "within" not from you. I am a non-smoker, I have had boyfriends who smoked and I can't say that I don't understand you why you want him to quit, but I still think is has to be his decision and not yours.
