"Be shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves"
This was Jesus' advice to his 12 disciples as they spread the Gospel. I think He just meant that they should be sharp/intelligent enough to answer any questions/criticisms thrown at them as they proclaim the good news.

It does sound negative but I think it's not how he meant that.
A snake is wise enough to know what to do with his knowledge. He gained it through his own expieriences and will share it as and when.

It has potential to kill anyman but kills very few only. We also should act like that, without attacking keeping all your ability to strike.

Always there have been the forces trying to stamp out Christianity. So christians need to be as "wise as serpents, but as harmless as doves".. Wise and discerning as to what is going on, especially what is truth from untruth, and harmless to not give ammo to all which seeks to bury Christianity..

This ties in with another scripture. Read the 13th chapter of Matthew in the New Testament. Pay close attention to verses 13 thru 17. The ability to see and hear the real truth is one of the Benefits of being Anointed with the Holy Ghost. With the aid of the Holy Ghost you are actually seeing the world and mankind through God's eyes. This is what Jesus was talking about when he said we were to be wise as a serpent. Only through the the Anointing of the Holy Ghost can our names be written in the book of life. If you have never been Anointed then Jesus doesn't know you. Remember I believe it is in the book of mark that Jesus said some would stand before Him and He would tell them He knew them not. These were people that tried to be Christians but were never Anointed.

Snakes are very quiet and usually only strike when provoked with no way out. the harmless as doves part means to not hurt others but instead be gentle. Let the beauty of Christ shine through you. Many people think that because Jesus was meek that He was also weak. There are many times that Jesus showed us how to be as shrewd as a snake. for instance every time the Pharisees or others tried to trick Him. he was careful with his answer just as we are to be.
