Biggest clothing waste of money?

I made the big mistake of going into an Abercrombie & Fitch store the other day and couldn't believe that they were selling ragged, tattered jeans for upwards of $200. What a collosal waste of money. Why not just buy a $20 pair from Wal-Mart and rip them to shreds yourself? How many of you have spent this type of money on a single piece of clothing that you now kinda regret?

I'm with you there. I hardly ever buy designer anything. When I was younger, it was all about being hip and fashionable. I think that now that I am older I just want to finish out wearing jeans (most likely wrangler) and perhaps some flip-flops.

I learnt the real value of this brand name/designer clothing when I first started looking for something to sell on ebay, when I realised what the retailer actually pays for these goods originally I could not believe it. I bought the items and while others were selling them for double the value I would just make a few quid on them needless to say I sold loads but with four kids could not keep up with the demand on my time. But you are right it is disgraceful what people want us to pay for these clothes just because they have a name on them.

I've never understood that either. It seems to me that whoever thought that up really counted on ppl being too blind to see the problem with it. Like you, I'd go buy a $20 pair and tear them up myself. How hard can it be...heck give them to a kid...they can do it in minutes.

OMG.. I couldn't bare to bring myself to buy a pair of $200 pair of jeans that are ripped up already! That is not only stupid but insane to blow that much money on a paid of jeans like that! There are sooo many other things I could use that $200 dollars for. Yeah Walmart has WAY better deals. Everyone I know shops at Walmart for clothing. I do and I also frequent thrift stores and hit other discount stores sales racks. With today's economy who can afford a pair of $200 pair of crappy ripped up jeans anyhow? I guess some rare rich yuppie can, I suppose.

I have never spent that much on a single piece of clothing. My method of thinking on that is why pay 200 bucks for one piece of clothing, when I could spend 200 bucks on 7 or 8 pieces of clothing. I shop almost religiously at Old Navy because they have cute clothes that are affordable. I'm not rich and I certainly don't have enough money to waste 200 bucks on a pair of jeans.

I wont ever spend money for just a piece of clothing like that. I buy designer clothes but if it is not that much. I have never bought a piece higher than $30. The last one I bought was a leather jacket when I got it for 75% off during the summer.
For me, indeed it is a big waste of money to spend that amount for clothing.

I have not, because I am on your side. I think this new style is ridiculous!
Shoot, half of the jeans I throw away are because of wholes and such, maybe I should have a yard sale and make good money off of them!!!! :p
I hope you didnt buy any jeans for that much. I dont think I have ever spent more than $30 for a pair of jeans, and I dont plan to ever spend more than that!

Not me no. $200 is my car payment. I just can't imagine paying that for a pair of jeans.

Personally, I LOVE Abercrombie. I shop there often, but ONLY in the clearance section. Ive gotten clothes and shoes for like 4 bux. Ive always been a frugal shopper, but I splurge now and again. And shopping at places like AEO and A&F, even Hollister and Buckle, are just heaven on earth for me. So, when I can go in there, and find great deals on clothes people are spending hundreds on, Ill do it. Though if I had the money of alot of the people that shop there regularly do, I dont think I would mind spending so much on a pair of jeans that looks like they came out of someones garbage. :D. Besides, if I wear my jeans long enough, they'll eventually look that way, then I;ll still be in style. lol!

nope.i wouldn't pay that for a pair of jeans no matter who made them.
earning the holes yourself is part of the fun of jeans.

This reminds me of when I was a teenager and it was really important that your boots didn't look new and shiny. We used to drive over them in our cars to give them that 'worn in' look! These days, I'm desperate to find a pair in my cupboard that looks half decent!
But I don't think roughing up boots yourself is in the same league as spending extra money for some designer to rough up your clothes for you! I've never spent that sort of money on a pair of jeans. I guess back when I had more money to spend I must have made some expensive mistakes, but I've always had a preference for rummaging in second hand shops so they've thankfully been few.

The only time I spent that kind of money ( well more actually) was on a gown for my son's wedding. But hey I did look great. That being said, I do buy nice things once in awhile, but jeans, come on, that is stupid. Jeans are JUST jeans, unless they are daimond crusted, not worth it. I rarely buy work clothes at Walmart, but PJs and hanging around the house clothes are fine. I can find some great bargains online and clearance racks. but I prefer quantity, I get bored after awhile.

I always seem to have buyers remorse whenever I spend too much for something. The only clothing I will really 'splurge' on is jeans, but I have a $50 limit. I hate buying clothes altogether and I can't imagine spending $200 on anything other than a heavy winter coat! But I am also very cheap and about 90% of my clothes came from a thrift store.

I cannot afford that kind of nonsense. I would wear out the jeans myself thankyou. fifty bucks is tops for a pair of jeans or cheaper. They are all probably made for a few dollars by some kid in Bangledesh anyways.
The only thing I splurge on is shoes. I have to have leather or can settle sometimes for a well made running shoe. Cheap vinyl make my feet sweat and smell and ill fitting shoes hurt my feet and the pain runs up my leg and back until I throw them away. If I get a comfortable pair of shoes I wear them out anyways so spending more on them is not false economy.

Ya that is ridiculous. I would never buy a pair of jeans for 200 dollars. I can go to any other store in the mall or any where else and find jeans that look way better than those for alot less. I dont even know why so many people are obsessed with Abercrombie and Hollister and all the big stores. I guess its all about the label. I could live without that label. I just think its a waste of money. With that money you could probably buy yourself 3 or 4 pairs of jeans.

I wouldn't spend money on designer labels, period! I won't even go into the stores Some of my best clothes were the ones that my sister grew out of, since we have very similar tastes in style and colour. I am not going to waste money on designer labels. You're right. If you want torn jeans, by a cheap pair and do it yourself.

I would never spend that kind of money on any single clothing item. Maybe a suit but I doubt I would even spend that much on a suit. I think the most I have ever spent on a single outfit is $80.00 and that was for an outfit to go on interviews in. I have not spent that much since, and I don't think I ever will, except maybe a bridesmaid dress or something like that, that I am forced to buy.

I'm thinking I have better sense than that, I'm sure I bought something that looked good in the store and didn't justify the sales receipt. I agree with you, why would you spend that type of money on rip up clothes, kids and their parents credit cards, geez.

Isn't that nuts!? A few years ago, I was shopping with my daughter. There was a man with his daughter in one of the stores. They were buying school clothes. Another daughter came into the store and was showing the man what she had gotten from Abercrombie & Fitch. She had bought 2 pairs of those ripped up, holey jeans! He threw a fit. He told her that she had at least 3 pairs of those at home and, No way in hell was he going to pay that much for 2 more pairs, she could wear the ones she had that got that way naturally. He marched her out of the store, back to A&F and got his money back. I wanted to applaud the man.
I want to get as much for my money as I can, so I don't spend that kind of money on one single item, ever! I might, if it were a very classic, superbly made suit that I could wear with other things. It would have to be something that was going to last for a very long time, though, not just a fad.
