myLotters, do you know about this? What is this called and why does it happen?
My guess is that if you stick your fingers too deep down your throat, then the body automatically presumes that you have food stuck and your body is trying to throw out the food or object stuck.
What do you thinK?

I guess that about explains it. Once something gets stuck in the throat the body automatically contracts the diaphragm area to prevent the foreign object from being ingested. that's why we bend, to exert pressure on the diaphragm and the stomach which causes us to expel something from the stomach as well.

hi bigfatboy really the doctors call it the gag reflex but I think the gag reflex is there to prevent you from choking in case a pice of food is lodge in your throat, probably taking your fingers as misplaced foreing pieces of food. anyway that is my theory. take it or leave it. lol

I guess it is just something there for protection in some way for our bodies, I was discussing this with a Dentists assistant some years ago as I feel as if I am going to be sick sometimes when I am brushing my back teeth and she said I must have a very high gag so I guess if we have it, it must be for a reason, as I believe everything in our bodies is for.

It's called a gag reflex. It happens when you touch the area at the back of your throat, and you're right actually. Whenever there is something touching that area, the nerves signal the brain to prevent it from getting into your throat, therefore you vomit it out. It helps keep people from choking.
