There are pro and cons to responding first. If you do respond first, you will be able to say almost anything because no one said it before, but if you do respond first you will not be able to avoid the discussion if a referral link is posted later on in it and you know it will get deleted and you will loose cents, your reply, reputation and interest ranking and there is nothing that you can do about it now.
On the other hand if you don't reply first, you can take a look at the other responses and perhaps get inspired to share your own view better on the matter at hand. A con to this would be the fact that some people may have already said what you were thinking.

yeah, i would like to be the first one to respond to a discussion because i like to put forward my idea first ahead of the others. in that way, they can build on my idea. it is nopt to show off that i am active or something. besides, responding first allows me to have contact with the one who made the discussion. usually, s/he responds also to the first response.

I am not really particular to being number one but I don't want to be the last one to reply to a certain discussion. If there are many pages all ready in a certain discussion, tendency is, I will not reply to it anymore.

It doesn't really matter much to me if I'm the first to respond or not. However, being the first gives me the feeling that I was the first to try to help the person posting the discussion. That's just about it.
Cheers~

I like to respond first also. But not all of us can be the first to respond and that is just fine whichever person I am to respond is alright with me at least I responded to the discussion.

I do like to respond first because I don't like to express the same response as someone else- if we happen to be on the same wave-length.
I don't sometimes it's just easier too than having to think about what others wrote while you are trying to respond to the actual post. Does that make sense.
