why do people tend to drink or smoke after a very stressful day at work? could it be because of psychological reasons (need for a 'comfort zone')? or could it be due to physiological reasons (physiological craving for a stimulant or relaxant)?
i myself have been wondering about this because when i'm stressed at work, especially with my nasty boss, i tend to succumb to invitations by co-workers for a night of drinking beer or hard drinks and smoking. hopefully i get the chance to relieve stress in less harmful ways.

Well most of them either smoke or drink to get out of the stress..but its also said medically that smoking increases stress and tend to smoke more which is bad for health!
