How do you know you have termites?

Ever since I moved to the US I heard a lot about termites and how you can have them but not see them but they could eat your entire house... We don't have that problem in Germany. Anyhow, this has worried me for quite some time and I have been wondering how I would know if I had any in the house before it is too late. Besides calling in an expert pest controller, what other signs are there that I should look out for?

Here is one of many AC articles about termites.

These are not written by me though.
There are links to other articles about them as well. I knew our house had them when we bought it after we tore up the front cements steps to add a patio deck. The wood along the bottom of the door was eaten away and we saw the swarm type termites all over.
Good luck, hope this article(s) are of some help.
HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Thanks! Great information there. Now I'll have to put on my inspector hat and inspect the house;)

Powdery wood by the door (if it's wooden) or any similar signs. And at night, you might hear a soft tuk-tuk-tuk sound, then that means something going on in the walls/ceilings of your bedroom - this was the experience of my parents. They thought it was something from the neighbors but when they noticed how frequent it is, they decided to have someone take a look at the ceiling and they actually did discover termites. They had the house treated immediately.
Thanks for commenting in my discussion!

Thanks! No strange noises yet other than wood shifting every once in a while. Good that your parents figured out in time that they had termites and not just loud neighbors;)
