Has anyone heard of or has been contacted by a publication called who's who of the world. They claim world wide acknowledgement and although listing is free, one has to pay US$1800 to be a member.

This is a well-known scam. They may, indeed, list you on their website but it will be a simple list (not a database) and practically impossible to search. The scam usually works so that you are encouraged to become a 'member' in order to receive 'extra benefits' and they then charge your card or bank account over and over. In order to cease your membership you may have to send a letter by surface mail to an address which is usually very difficult to find. They then use delaying tactics (such as moving offices and 'never receiving' your mail) in order to keep bleeding your account dry. Keep away!
