with or without skin?

Do you prefer mashed potatoes with or without skin? And slicing your finger while slicing the potatoes does not count as "with skin". I also want to know what kind of potatoes you like to use for mashed potatoes. We tried red potatoes one year for Thanksgiving with the peel removed. I loved them and so did my fiance. They were a little thick but boy did they ever taste good. I think next time we'll use them mixed with Idaho so maybe they won't be so thick.

Nothing beats red potatoes, with the skin on. I can't remember the last time I ever peeled a potato, let alone bought regular potatoes. They might have been thick because you didn't add enough milk or butter. I do instant potatoes most often though, once or twice a week. I like the brand Idahoan, they make a bunch of different flavors like 4 cheese, they're the best. It's not too expensive either, it's about $1 a package. I need 3 packages for my family.. but there's usually left overs.

My wife peels them all the time. I think with the skin on there's more taste and nutrients as opposed to peeled ones. I love red skin on taters with garlic and butter. Lot's of butter. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We used what seemed like a ton of milk and butter. I don't know why they were thick but they tasted great so we didn't really care. We usually do instant too but we prefer real potatoes so when we use them that's how we prefer them.

I do real mashed potatoes for holidays or big events... or if I'm just in the mood. Mostly when I do real potatoes I'll roast them or cook them in the slow cooker along with the meat I'm cooking (usually pot roast), so not really mashed, but always red, and always with the skins on.

Mmm... mashed potatoes! I could happily skip -everything- at the Thanksgiving table and just eat mashed potatoes, butternut squash and dressing! I actually like my mashed potatoes thick and chunky, with the peels on, thanks... but only if the potatoes are a thin-skinned variety - red are good, Yukon are better. I love Yukon gold potatoes with butter, salt and pepper - maybe some garlic salt.

I love them smothered in butter, salt and pepper. Sometimes a little sour cream.

I love mashed potatoes lots of different ways, and one of my favorite is with the skin on, as it really has a lot of flavor, and as long as the potato has a thin skin rather than a thick skin, and it is for the most part a "new potato", as they and the reds have the most flavor, then I'm happy.

That's true, they do need thin skins to leave them on.

With please. It is where the vitamins are. My hubby made baked potatoes tonight. And I ate the whole thing skin and all. With mashed, I think it also adds to the flavor. The texture isn't bad either.

I don't like the texture with skin for mashed potatoes. I prefer them creamy.

No matter what type of taters I use, I always leave the skin on. The skin of the potato is the most vitamin-filled part, I love it.

Aww, why not? Is it a texture thing?

I like mashed potatoes of any sort but with the skin off. I like baked potatoes all the way down too the skin but better if they are cooked a little too long so the skins are crunchy. yummy!

The only time I ever peel potatoes is for mashed potatoes. I've never tried leaving the skins on, I guess I've just never thought about it. I might have to try leaving the skins on next time I make them. My family would probably like them with the skins on, since we always eat roasted potatoes, baked potatoes, etc with the skins on.

if i will cook big potatoes then i will peel the skin off. if i will cook baby potatoes then i will no longer peel the skin. if i will fry the potatoes like idaho for examples i will not peel the skin anymore if i make it to chips. it all depends on what i am going to cook or what am i going to do with the potatoes.

I love eating mashed potato with or without skin though I prefer more the without skin mashed potato. I never tried to make mashed potato, but my cousin love it and always have in their house. I only eat mashed potato with skin at their house. I love eating mashed potato in KFC. They taste good and the gravy blends well with mashed potato especially when it's hot. They so tasty and yummy that I feel hungry now.

You're the second KFC potatoe liker that responded. I haven't eaten them in years. Maybe I'll get some soon. I don't like gravy but I do remember KFC potatoes with gravy are good.

I like them both ways. Normally I use russet potatoes, but I will sometimes do red. I bought a 5 pound bag of Yukon Gold potatoes last night that I am going to use for baked potatoes. I have not used them for mashed potatoes yet.

I have to say that I am more comfortable with mashed potatoes minus the skin. I tried the ones with skin, it's ok but I still find it uncomfortable. Anyways, they say the skin has more nutrients than the one peeled.

I prefer them without the skin, that is for for boiling them and frying them.. I love it this way! I don't think that I can handle the skin being on mines while eating.. But I will make an exception, I will eat the baked potato from Wendy's with the skin on it.. But, I will not eat the skin itself.. I will just eat the insides of the potato..

I totally prefer the skin. The skin contains certain vitamins , for the life of me i can not remember the vitamins name, that helps with aging and helping to keep you younger. . My favorite potato is the golden. so good for mashed or potato soup.

Kennebec Potato - The best flavored potatoes I ever ate.
I only half peel our potatoes because the skin adds to the fiber and the flavor. If I leave all the skins on it is harder to mash them. I have mashed both red and white potatoes but for the most part I do the red ones. One year we raised some keenybeck potatoes they were the best that I have ever had. I haven't had any that good since then and they were a white potato. I would like to find them again. We were iving in Kansas at the time.

It depends for me on which potatoes I use. The white ones or yellow have to have the skin removed. Red I actually partially peel and make them that way.

That's what others have said also, that the thin skinned ones don't have to be peeled but the thick skinned ones do.

I love mashed potatoes. I usually order them as side dish at KFC. I think we only have the same potatoes here in our grocery. Maybe am not just that particular or keen at really looking at potatoes. Even though I love mashed potatoes, I don't know how to cook and prepare them. I just love to eat! LOL

Hahaha. I usually use yukon gold or red potatoes with the skin on. I like to use sour cream, cream cheese, and milk to get the right consistency. I also like to add chives or a bit of pressed garlic in with mine. I am a bit of a glutton when it comes to potatoes. There is absolutely nothing that beats Grandma's potatoes though. Good ol' bag of white baking potatoes, peeled and mashed up with LOADS of butter, a touch of milk, and a dash of salt. I don't know how she does it, it's a simple recipe but I can never manage to make them taste like hers. Grandma secret I guess! :)

Sour cream is yummy on potatoes. I also use milk when mashing them. Chives are yummy too. They gotta have butter and salt. I want some now.
