Something weird is going on...
For the 3rd time since September one of my daughter's 3rd grade schoolbooks has vanished out of her desk! She came home yesterday and told me that her Social Studies book was in her desk when she got out of school last Friday and was gone when she got to school yesterday morning. She doesn't carry her books all over the school, they stay in her desk all the time until she needs them for class or to bring it home for homework at night. They are way too big (& too heavy) to hide so I know she doesn't have them at home. I always check her backpack as soon as she gets home so I know she didn't bring it here. Her teacher is now insisting that she lost it and is demanding I pay for a new book! Fat chance of THAT happening. The last one was her big book for her English class and the one that vanished before that one was her Spelling workbook!

I thought the kids had lockers. If you know your daughter to be trustworthy, you have that on your side. I would talk to the principle. And tell them this keeps happening and you are not responsible for the fact that the school does not have lockers. Ask the teacher what proof she has that your daughter is losing her books. I would like an update on this.

Here the kids have lockers from middle school on thru high school but she's just in 3rd grade. She only has a desk or a cubby to put her stuff in. I tried calling the principal yesterday and left a voicemail for her, she never returned the call. I'll try calling again tomorrow on my day off and see if I can talk to her about it. They replaced the book but she's being punished by making her pay for it with the reward coins that she earned in class for good behavior. She has to pay 3 coins, one for each book that's been declared lost.

This is terrible. No wonder people homeschool so much today. I wonder what they will do if the books continue to be stolen and she does not have anymore points for good behavior.

I would have to say the best thing for you to do is confront her teacher and tell her that you check her backpack every day after school and that you would know if she were hiding it or lying about not having it. That if it was misplaced it would have to be at school, and then ask her if her door is locked during lunch. It is very unfortunate that it keeps getting misplaced, but that doesn't mean it's your fault or your daughters.
