I've decided...

Starting in January I'm no longer going to be spending any of my online earnings that are paid via Paypal. The crunch around Christmas time is far too extreme, trying to pay the usual bills which we can hardly afford on top of trying to come up with Christmas gifts. So next year I'm going to start as early as January. Every payment made into my Paypal account will just sit there, unspent, until it's time to do my Christmas shopping. By then I should have a good couple hundred or more saved up, so that will cover a good portion of my holiday spending. What are you going to do next year to save for Christmas?

Can you just leave the money in Paypal like that? I thought if you didn't claim it w/in a time period it was returned to the person received from.

I've never heard of that. I always have something in my paypal account. Usually it's less than a dollar, but the account is never empty.

hmm, well I would rather save mine too & use all at one time. Think I'll start doing the same.

That is an excellent idea! I'm sure you'll be much more relaxed next year because you wont be running around like a crazy person trying to figure out where the money's coming from for everything. We spend very little at Christmastime any more. The kids are grown, and we don't buy for each other. We get things for ourselves all year long so we don't really have anything to buy at Christmas.

I have a feeling you'll do just fine. And with your plan for next year it'll be a lot easier on you come this time a year from now.

I still have 5 little kids, the olest is only 11, so I spend a lot of money at Christmas. So far this year I've spent $400, and I'm not quite done yet. I haven't even started on my youngest or my husband.

So, should we start taking bets on how long that resolve will last? LOL. I say every year that I'm going to shop all year long for Christmas but then I never do it. I'm a huge procrastinator. We have a christmas club account set up with our bank and some of my husbands paychecks go into it each pay, but unfortunately we've been tapping into it to get the bills paid. I'm hoping we can get our finances under control and save up for next year.

Yeah I say the same thing every year too. I always say I'm going to start sooner, but then November rolls around and it's like "OMG, only 6 weeks till Christmas and I haven't even started shopping yet!" Earlier this year I did start to put like $5 a week into a savings account, but when things got tight we also put it all into our checking account. I'm almost thinking of starting a savings account at a different bank, maybe if it's at a different bank I'll forget about it when I need the money, so it will be easier to save.

I would never be able to leave money in my paypal account that long I would as least transfer it out into a savingas account so it can gain a little bit of interent at least. I am still thinking about this Christmas so not sure what to do about next year that is to far away to think about.

My paypal account gains more interest than my savings account. I need $20 in my savings to earn a penny a month. In paypal I earn a penny a month off $1.

Kats, that's what I've been doing the past few months. I almost had it sent last month to my account, but decided to keep it until next month when I'll have a little more. I'll have enough to buy some of my Christmas. I buy what I can afford to pay for and don't charge anything. So Christmas might be under a crunch this year, but at least I won't be paying after the first of the year.

I wish I'd been saving for longer. I didn't really start until 2 weeks ago, so I have a layaway which is 1/3 paid for, and $20 to spend, plus I've already bought a couple books. I still have a bit more to do, which is going to be far more than that $20. Hopefull we can cover it.

Well, I should have around $200 by next month. I didn't make payout for this month - the comments just haven't made much of anything last month or this month! But I've made some money on another site where I write and I have 2 pending payouts from them. But I don't know if I'll get that money by the middle of next month or not.

I'll probably get a part time job for next Christmas, if not before then.

I'd love to get a part time job. I did last summer, but had to quit when school started. I can't work opposite hubby's hours because he works 8 am till 8pm most days. Then during school days I can't trust a sitter to bathe the kids, cook them dinner, get them ready for bed, and take them to all their activities. I don't want to work weekends because that takes away from my time with hubby, so, for now, I'm stuck. I'm waiting for the little ones to get a bit older, and possibly in school, then I'll work part time during the day while they're in school.

I use to do that and use the money I made for vacation. We take a family vacation every year and are always overspending, so my online earnings make it easier to enjoy and spend freely on vacation. This past year I have used my paypal to buy early Christmas gifts and for unexpected things that come up with the kids~ $70 football cleats, $120 for a basketball tournament. ...things like that. I think it is a great way to save money because it isn't in our reach right at that moment we want to buy something. I will probalby do the same as you next year and save it for Christmas.

I can't leave my PayPal account alone. I get too much money in my PayPal account. A lot of the money I earn for living expenses goes through my PayPal account. I thought about opening a savings account and transferring a set amount into it each week though.

I tried that last year, actually got the savings account to $25. Then we had a bad week where we overdrew our account so I had to take the money out. If it's on Paypal I might forget about it, because the savings account I see everytime I log in to see my checking account balance.

I never spend the online money I earn now, it ain't much anyway as I have slowed up a bit on all my online stuff. I only recently stopped spending it maybe 3 or 4 months, I was going to use it towards christmas but I had the money for that so I may leave it in there until next year for the holiday. I will start putting money away for christmas again after next week when I have finished off my shopping and that will be for next christmas.

But what can ya do? Now that i'm starting college soon i'll get extra money from reimbursement checks for financial aide but that's about it really...I'll also try to save my earnings on here and not cash them out as well. But it's kind of hard to do that lol...Good luck wit trying to save you're money tho. Hope you're method works for you!

I use to buy quite a few gifts ..but that was years ago.. Now I got only 3 or 5 gifts to buy and keep spending to a very reasonable limit. I find with each passing year people get WAy to caught up in all this gift buying bizz.. ! rather make a nice card ..or spend some time with close friends than just buying them something. My actual X-mas budget rarely goes over $100.00. Its really to bad that so many people get so caught up in the "Buying Frenzie" I find it takes away from the true spirit of the season which I believe is closeness , love and good times.

I don't shop for anyone outside of my immediate family, which would be my husband and children. My children come first, and if I can afford to I get something for hubby. I don't go all nuts as I can't afford to. The kids will get less than 10 gifts each, and that includes things like socks, underwear, outfits, and toys. Each gift is under $50.

Saving Money - Using your PayPal like a bank a good idea
Is what I do. I lett it sit until something comes up that I want or think I need...lol and use my pay pal so doesn't hit the house hold budget. Like it's the only way I can get my husbands Christmas gifts and he not know what they are because when we go or Igo shopping he wants to go to. So today I ordered a gift he won't know about that will be under the tree. But yes saving until Christmas is great idea.

I shop all year long so that I'm not hit by a huge bill when this time of year rolls around. I really don't even buy for too many people, but I will admit that I probably spend too much on both my husband and my toddler. What I do is take out a certain amount of money each month, and use it for Christmas shopping, if I don't use it that month, I save it back until I do use it, and just keep adding to it. I usually save back a percentage of my online earnings. In January, once we are sure what my husband's take home pay will be after his raise, we will rework our budget and decide how much of my online earnings will be needed for extras (his pay covers all the bills), and decide how much to put in savings, etc.

That's a very good plan for you. In that case, your money in paypal will all serve as your savings. I have been planning the same thing a couple of months ago but I can't resist it. I really spend my money in paypal. Too bad for me.

That's not a bad idea. Just the other day at my credit union, they were talking about all the people who had inquired about starting a Christmas club account for next year. Everyone used to have those when I was growing up. I didn't even know they still had them.
