Someone gave me a gift of Bath and Body's Black Amethyst body lotion. It's from their signature collection. Well when you open the bottle it smells aboslutely heavenly!! But after you put it on it's like the smell increases to almost an unbearable strong odor! I have had other lotions from bath and body that do this....the longer they are on the stronger they get. Have you ever gotten a lotion that does this on you? It might just be the chemistry of my skin and the lotion. I hate to pitch it in the garbage but I can hardly stand wearing it!

I'm sorry that happened to you. Does this happen if you use the shower gel instead of the lotion? If it doesn't, then you could always use the shower gel for a lighter fragrance.
B&BW had this line of apothecary type shower gels and lotions once...I bought a small trial size bottle of one and it made me break out in red bumps all over my body! I think it was sandalwood & rose, something like that. It's been so long now that I don't remember. I've never had a problem with their regular line though!

Sorry...I forgot to add that you can take a bit of the Black Amethyst lotion and mix it with an unscented lotion for a lighter fragrance. Since you liked the scent so much, this way you can still use it.

The first thing that came to my mind before I read the remaining of your post, was that it was probably your body chemistry reaction to it. There is a perfume that my sister loves, as do I, but she cannot wear it because of how it smells on her. I wear it and it smells just like it does in the bottle. She wears it, and the smell changes.

Whoa, that sounds pretty bad! No, I don't think I've ever put on a fragrance or lotion that actually got stronger as I wore it. I wonder what the ingredients are that might be mis-mingling with your body. Bath and Body Works' products are usually so fantastic. Guess that Black Amethyst is a fluke. Hope I don't get that for Christmas...

I hear you, jillhill. My mom likes to give me these lotion and cream stuff as I don't intentionally make my way to their stores. I've had a few of them that smells good when you open them like you could eat them. But when I put them on, it's either too strong or just smells differently. Cool tangerine smells good for a few minutes but not for a whole day. So is Apricot Mango.

Yeah sometimes it is like that the same thing happend to me sometimes it smells good going on, but sometimes it does not. I think some lotions are just for show insted of use. Did you tell the person that gave you that.

I have never had that happen with lotion. Why not just use a whole lot less!

I'm never sure if they are becoming stronger the longer I wear them or if I am just ultra sensitive to the smell. I have to be very particular with scents I put on my body. I can't stand smells following me around.... love the smell in the bottle but can't be around it for long.

I once received an expensive body lotion from my mother-in-law. It was a huge bottle and I was so excited to use it. But the first time I put it on, my husband negatively reacted to the smell! He almost didn't want to sleep beside me!
Unfortunately, I had to agree with him on the smell. Even if the lotion did wonders for my skin. Because after applying it, my skin really felt silky. But I had to endure the smell of it all throughout the night.
Like you, I didn't want to throw it away. So, I still used it for a few weeks, much to the complains of my husband. Everytime I apply that lotion at night, he kept to his side of the bed, as far away from me as possible.

I think that Bath and Body's products have a very strong smell. I have a hard time using them because of that. They really aggravate my allergies and sense of smell. My husband really can't tolerate it. Although, I do like the kitchen soap that is lemon. I haven't bought it in so long that I don't even know if they still make it. I agree, it's hard to just throw it away. Maybe another friend of yours will like it.

I'm going to try the above suggestiong of mixing it with an unscented to tone it down first...this is not the first time something from bath and body has had this reaction on me....but I love the smell in the bottle....just don't like it after a few minutes!

Hi Jill, Yes all perfumes and lotions do smell different on each person because of their own body make up. I cannot wear Chanel as it smells like cat wee on me and yet my aunt can and it smells gorgeous on her so it could be thee reason this one becomes overpowering on you. My son even after washing his hair has a musky smell to his hair but it must be from his natural body oils. It does seem a shame to bin it. Maybe give it to someone else to try as it may suit them better. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hey Jill,
It is the chemistry of your body and the chemistry of their lotion. You know how some perfumes smell so nice on you and others you can't wait to wash off? It's the same thing. Not everyone can wear the lotions or perfumes. Plain and simple, it is a chemical reation.

I havent bought any lotion at Bath and Bodyworks. However, that's my favorite brand for hand soap. I buy midnight pomegranate and sweet pea. They smell so good. I may have to check their lotion though. See if it does stink. We buy our air refreshner there too.

I have purchased lotions that smell great when I open them. Once they are on they take on another scent. Body chemistry does have a lot to do with it. I have had to give away some very expensive lotions and perfumes because I cannot tolerate the scent once I have it on.

Maybe you have applied to it too much on your body? This is an expensive product and I would hate it too if you pitch it in the garbage. How about trying to apply only a little dots here and there, and see whether the strong smell still occur or it would be just nice.
However if the same thing still continues, I suggest you just give it to another person who can wear it. At least the lotion can be put into use, and didn't end up in the garbage. If you have a poor friend or somebody whom you think would appreciate if you give it to her, this is a great way to expose this lotion.
Because this lotion is given to you, you can do nothing about it. But when you go out yourself to find a suitable lotion for yourself, I suggest you don't purchase it straight away but try the sample lotion provided in the store. By doing this you are actually experimenting the product and will know whether the lotion is suitable for you or not.
If you are near to me, I would be happy if you give it to me! Lol...
Lots of hugs.

My daughter and her mother in law get body lotions from there a lot and I have never heard them saying anything about having that problem. Like you said, it might just be something with your body that causes this to happen. Just like the oil of olay, it is supposed to be so gentle but I can not use it or I break out.
Maybe let someone else try it and see if it does the same to them then you will know if it is just that you can't use their products or not.
