should we suffer to enjoy life?

I'm confused, some people say that to really achieve the best things in life, one should try hard to be able to obtain it. Though nothing, they say, in life is for free, but does it have to be that way? Pay before can have something you want, struggle before you can get what you deserve? Not to mention those people who made it to the top for fooling people who are trying their best to be human.
