Backups and losing something significant

People often neglect making backups. I've heard so many stories where someone has lost something that's worth several months' work. Nowadays people also have lots of their family pictures that mean much to them in their computers and don't think what happens when hard drive breaks or the computer is stolen or something... When I'm doing a work thing or something else of any relevance, I'll take lots of backups and I burn my pictures and videos on CD's and DVD's atleast once a year. How often you take backups? And of what things? Have you lost something significant?

I only back up my work related files often. As for my personal files, I seldom do any backup. Work related files are important, otherwise I'll have to redo the whole project again, this is not what I want. It's a good habit to back up your personal stuffs too. I plan to backup the pictures I've taken, but until now I haven't do anything with the pictures yet.
