Chocolates, sweets and soft drinks are poison to hyperactive children
A parent has come to our school because the Assistant Head has banned her son from eating sweets. He is a hyperactive child and when he eats sweets his behaviour becomes uncontrollable. Chocolates, sweets and soft drinks are poison to hyperactive children. I do wonder why parents fail to understand that teachers do work for their interest of their children.

Teachers have a difficult job and they deal with tiny tyrants who always get their way. This makes it extra difficult because these are adorable darlings who have powerful backers to come to their aid if they cry. I had a hyperactive child who was always moving and the teacher complained to me about it. I told her that her job was to teach and my child's job was to move. Lol! Cheers!!

Some teachers work for the best interest of children, not all. Also some parents may not realize that little Johnnie or Suzie isn't on good behavior when mommy dearest is away. Some tend to think there kid does no wrong.
As for banning a child from sweets. The school should ban sweets from all kids. Not just one child. As that is not fair. Also the school should than offer an alternative snack for the ones who can not have sugar, chocolate or sweets.

really?because i did not know that honestly...i let my kids eat sweets because they like to eat it but i watch how much they have eaten...1 lollipop will do or 2 small bars of chocolates, or yeah they like to drink softdrinks...but now that it is that harmful to kids..i will not allow them anymore to eat or drink those stuff...i myself will cut on softdrinks so that my kids will not follow me.

My eldest son could never drink cherryade or cheap cola. It took me ages to figure out why at certain times he would run wild, he was a real pain and eventually by cutting things out of his diet I found out. He is 17 now but I still do not buy fizzy pop just in case it happens to my other children.

in fact, those sweets aren't only bad to children but to adults too... eating too much sweets can lead to diabetes and other complications... my dad's been suffering from diabetes.. actually, he's already insulin dependent.. it's the responsibility of parents to watch over their children.. as early as now, teach your children to eat healthy foods like fish, fruits and veggies..

I think if one can't get it then none in the class should get it. Kids don't understand sometimes all they know is that they are being punished because of something they can't control. I feel it is not fair to let the others have snacks or drink stuff he isn't allowed to have in front of him. I have a few Hyperactive children in my family so I understand how overwhelming and distracting a hyper child can be. Thankfully our school has reverted to a healthy snack only regimen and no junk food allowed as snack only water and real juices. and only certain snacks. I think that this is a step in the right direction and maybe this class should try it.

Those things are poison for adults too. Many aches and pains and other physical complaints can be controlled by limiting the amount of sweets and soft drinks people consume.

I agree 100%!
I have a daughter who we don't allow sweets anymore due to her having some problems with being hyperactive. If she has one candy the whole day is just crazy with her. Some people don't understand, but I have seen the change from not allowing sweets in the house anymore.
We actually still allow her candy, but sugar free candy & suger free drinks. I have tried the sugar free stuff & it's not bad at all. Kids adjust... :D

Sounds like a clear case of Cause and effect to Me..If the kid Goes Hyper on sweets, restrict his intake! I work in a restaurant that's family friendly, but still shake my head in disbelief when I see uncontrollable kids running wild being bought sugary colas and sodas,Even Energy drinks! What's wrong with these people?! It's not a playpark or creche..People are working, serving hot foods, and there's kids running around and rolling on the floor underfoot?
(Slightly O/T- I remember a Stella Awards case where a Woman brought a case against a store when She tripped over such an unruly kid,and I think injured her Ankle..and Won! not so unusual,I hear you say? It was HER kid!)
There's an element of parents who're prepared to dump the raising of their kids onto the schools..if the kid doesn't know better at home,it's not easy for a teacher to pick up the ball the parents dropped, and also teach the kid book larnin as well! Education should never stop..People need to know the effect large doses of sugar has on Kids as well as Adults!

I do not know about that.. ALl i know is that, sweets and chocolates are supposed to keep children quiet and not the other way round.. ANd so if the child is hyper active, there's nothing one can do, and so, by not giving sweets and chocolates is not a solution too.. What the school can do, is to recommend the parents to bring him to a doctor..

Well obviously, the food you mentioned contain a lot of sugar. I don't see why parents don't know this. I'm not a parent and it makes so much sense to me. Since I was in high school I understood how sugar is like brain food which is why I eat chocolates, cakes, and frappucinos at night when I'm trying to stay up late to finsh a paper or something. Anyway it's a good thing that school administrators are responsible and vigilant.

The parent had a problem with the teacher banning her child from these treats?
I think the parent is wrong if this is what she come to the school for. The teacher has to deal with this hyperactive child all day. I am sure she had the child's best interest at heart.
The child might not have told the whole story to his parents.

Hi ronald..My daughter has a son and he is hyperactive, she will give him soft drinks but watered down but not coke or fizzy drinks squash or juice and sweets or chocoalate during the day but not late aternoon which is about 3pm as that makes him more hyperactive that way she is keeping his behavior under control..the teachers are well aware of this and co-operate with her..I do believe that the mother will always know what is best for their children..and that also teachers etc should adhere with how they feel their child should be looked after unless it affects their schoolwork...littleowl

I have read that these sorts of foods aren't very good for hyperactive children, but saying that I don't allow my children to have too much of these thnigs anyway as they aren't that good for them. My children aged 11 and two 9 year olds don't even like fizzy drinks and my 20 year old never drank fizzy drinks until she was 11 as she didn't like them.

Yes right! Those are poison to hyperactive children because they are making them even more hyperactive and cannot be controlled anymore. In fact even to those who are not hyperactive those stuff should be controlled because too much consumption will most likely bring them to hyperactivity!

I definitely agree preservatives in modern-day food are causing a lot of behavioural and health problems in children. When I was at school I didn't know one child with asthma, allergies or HDD. Nowadays every second child seems to have some problem or other, and I'd be willing to bet if colourants and chemicals were banned from food, the problems would decrease drastically. At our local primary school, they actually have 'Medication Time', where kids go down to the nurse's office to have their tablets. Terrifying!

Some parents are in denial that their children are hyperactive. They dont understand how difficult it is to deal with uncontrollable children.
