We have a new colleague Our boss has just introduced a new colleague in our staff room. She is quiet as a mouse trying to observe us and see what is going on. I wonder how do you feel in an new working environment. I have been working for the past twelve years in the same environment and the same colleagues. How do you feel if you had to work in a new environment? © ronaldinu 2008

I remember my first day on the job. I was so nervous I couldn't even eat! I felt like such an outsider! Not only was I new to the job, but I was new to the area! So I had to learn both the job & new city I was in & it was overwhelming! Plus I am very shy!! Well, its been nearly 10 years & I'll tell you these girls I work with are some of the best friends that I have ever made!

I would be nervous at first I would also be quite and see how everyone is and then little by little as I got ot know people better I would loosen up and become probably not noisy but not so shy and lend my opinions in when I felt it was needed.

that sounds like fun, to have a new colleague. i'm not really a people-person but i do enjoy having new colleagues. it's like a whole new world to be discovered. will she be nice or naughty? will she be able to help with the workload or add to it? these are things i can't wait to find out. as for myself, i might be getting a new work environment in the next few months. i've been in my current environment for the past eight years. colleagues have came and gone but i'm still around. this time, it's finally my turn to go to a new place. guess i'll be just like your new colleague, quiet as a mouse trying to observe everyone. cheers

maybe she was just trying to adopt in YOUR environment.. she was observing and studying every acts you are doing so she know how to respond or act too... Just give her a time and Im sure she will learn her way on how to socialize with you guys.

I guess i will behave in the same way as her too ^_^ For it's a new surrounding after all, and that i need to know about the rules and 'politics' in there, b4 i can show my true self.. If not, i will be making more enemies than frenz while working there, and i wont feel comfortable at all.. hehe ^_^ PLus, new environment, new faces, i will be more curious and wanna explore around too, and observe, who are the ones i can befriend first.. haha

Its a bit nervous experience for me. New people, new rules, new work, it takes time to feel comfortable in the new work place. I just changed my job recently. And i was quite uncomfortable in these new people and this new place. But now everything is fine.

I will feel nervous when I am in a new working environment. In the past when I worked in a big company. I tried to remember my colleagues' names and wrote it down in my little notebook. And I also wrote down where they sat so that I wouldn't make a mistake. It's quite silly:) I love China

I never imagined myself working in another environment. I have been working here in my office for more than 25 years and getting into a new working environment will probably take a lot of adjustment on my part. Imagine dealing with a new set of staff and all new things around. That will perhaps be somewhat tough in the beginning!

Starting new jobs is always a bit daunting - it takes a while to feel comfortable with your surroundings and being able to 'trust' your new colleagues. Your new worker is probably just getting the feel for things, and will come out of her shell when she's comfortable and people have shown themselves to be friendly.

Very uncomfortable and nervous, if no one would approach me and make me welcome. I will probably not make any friends. Most workplaces, the employees have their own little groups of friends and new comers are strangers.

I think getting adjusted to a new place is a time consuming thing. Not so easy for some people because everything is new there and some people like me take some time to get adjusted to the new environment. The first day looks so weird and everyone there looks so different as if they are the type of human being who we never saw before.. i mean the new people look at them like that.

I am in a new workplace. it was difficult to fit in especially that there are already people that have been in the same place for so long. I just stay on one corner during meetings , wont talk much but would smile to everybod and greet them. I am very observant of how my colleagues behave, how the bosses give instructions and how the other staff deal with each other.

I was usually nervous of the new job, in the sense of could I handle it but I was always very friendly and made friends rather quickly wherever I went.

Now this question really suits me. I myself, am new to my current job (I'm two months old in my new work). The first time I was introduced to the people in my new company I really felt shy and speechless, they barely hear my voice when I speak. Like your new colleague, I observe the work environment and got my first impression of it - I had a good first impression of this one, people are friendly and I saw the dedication they put in to their work. Slowly I talk to my new colleagues to get to know them little by little. Now I am at ease walking around the staff area and I get the grasp of working the tasks assigned to me. It really is quite not easy at first, but the moment I get to know the place, i feel more comfortable. I could work my heart out and I get to be more productive.

In my last two jobs I was the boss and felt horrible and actually quite nervous in the early days of both. I was taken to one place where I met the senior manager and we chatted for about half an hour. Then she took me into a conference room and the whole staff were there waiting for me to say something! Which I did of course. But I was expecting to meet them at their desks and in truth had nothing prepared. LOL. But it didn't take too long to get into the swing of things. If you are nice to people, they tend to be pleasant in return.
