Does anyone here still use dial up access?

Broadband has become the standard over the past few years, and now companies are offering 8 Mb and above to attract customers. despite this broadband does not suit everyone and people still use dial up access. Do you use dial up, and if so why do you prefer it?

No I don't personally, but I know a few people that still does, and they hate it *lol* They would get higher speed but its not available in their area.

It must seem slower now than it was when I used it, because the sites tend to use more graphics these days.

I don't think that many people still use the dial-up connection (in the developed industrial countries). But let's not forget that in some situations it still can be useful. For example, in Brazil some operators of fixed telephony provide the dial-up connections for free, if you use their other services. So, when we just moved here and didn't have a cable TV and internet yet, we were using the dial-up internet for free from the home phone company.

Yes, that would certainly be a practical approach. Here in the United Kingdom the calls are always charged, unless of course the connection is broadband.

I would have thought that broadband was cheaper than dial up unless you only use the internet for a short time.

Like most people I was still on dial up until about 5 years ago. It was fine at the time but now most web pages are heavier and that would slow down loading time. It must be very frustrating.

I always used dial up until recently. In the USA I had no problem with it other than it was a little slow, but here in Nicaragua, I had all kinds of problems with it. The phone lines were not very stable so I had very frequent disconnects. They had also given me a digital phone line when we got phone service which was great if I wasn't on line. It had call waiting and these people had no numbers to dial to disengage the call waiting feature when you were online so if anyone called my number and I was online I got knocked offline and the company said there was nothing they could do which was ridiculous. Now through much manuevering, I have finally gotten broadband and I am sharing it with my neighbor to cut the cost for both of us. I am on my second day of using it and I can listen to music and download things without losing it halfway through. So I have to say I am loving it. It has definitely cut down on the frustration. I actually was offline before for a couple of months just because some lineman had messed with my phone making it too unstable to carry the internet on it.

Nope wouldn't know what to do with a dial up access, seems so slow to be on broadband that I can't imagine going slower.

Surprisingly, dial up is not always slower, it depends very much on the website. Many websites have fairly heavy graphics which would require a longer time for dial up to open, but a site can be slow to run due to heavy traffic which would be same for both dial up and broadband.

I'm unable to access broadband unfortunately. It's a pain because I spend a lot of time on the computer and spend half of it waiting for things to load. I looked into satellite but they will limit me to a 500mb download per month and 8 days into this month I already had downloaded over 300mb. They were going to charge me 8cents for every mb I went over my allowed limit. Where I live, we don't even have a mobile phone service.

500 Mb is a very small download quota, particularly if you are using the internet regular. A good proportion of this would be taken up by updating your operating system and antivirus, so I cannot see how they can justify that.

dial - dial up access
I don't use it personally. But, still many people have dial up access, as I know.I don't think broadband does not suit everyone, atleast now. It is much economical.

I realise that it would not be oconomical to use broadband if you only used the internet a few hours per week, but it should be the cheapest way for a regular user.

I use dial up. It's still too expensive to get DSL so I'm taking advantage of the unlimited dial up with my phone company.

Inlimited dial up is not too bad if you are using sites like Mylot, but it must be difficult to download items.

I am using dial up because my mother is against putting a dsl because she is afraid that by some time we cannot afford to pay it because she is paying for so much bills. The good thing about dial up is being able to change the ip addresses. =)

This sounds like a sensible reason. It is never easy to predict what you can afford in the future.

This is true, I am using a static IP address. however, I could request a dynamic IP address from my ISP if I wanted that option.

At home and at work I use broadband. Recently we bought an appartment at seaand we go there every two weeks, so we have a dial up connection there, just for checking e-mails and a few minor thinks. It's so funny when you hear that voice when the computer connects to the internet. Otherwise I can't imagine going back on dial up at home.

I am one of those fools still using dial-up. I hate it! My husband is very cheap, though, and he thinks it's good enough for what I do. There is hope, though. He just got a used computer for himself, and in order to hook it to the internet our son says we have to have broadband. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Broadband would not make a vast difference at Mylot because the pages do not contain a lot of graphics, but it will certainly make a big difference in general. Fingers are now crossed.

We are still on dial-up but have a joint connection with someone else and that is all they can use .... but it is still cheaper this way with sharing the costs .... also on our phone plan we get 50 free phone calls per month which means being able to get online for free at least once a day and for 3 weeks of the month can get online twice a day ..... it is slow but as it only costs a couple of bucks a month and nothing at all for the phone connection, anyone could tolerate the speed.

I have to agree with you on that point, the cost is always a major factor. I remember using my mobile phone some years ago because I did not have a telephone line connected, and I created a software modem of 7 Kps.

would anyone use an abacus in this era of computers??? similarly y would anyone want to use dial-up modems anymore!! its speed is ridiculous compared to the broadband modem!

Your reference to the speed is a valid one, but there are still many people using dial up for one reason or another, with cost being the main one. I doubt if many people would choose dial up if they had the option of switching to broadband without any cost or other issues.

Hello Asylum. I used dial up for a long time. I finally switched to broadband when Verizon Yahoo offered me their service for only $14.99 per month. I have to admit that is it much better. And I like the fact that you can receive phone calls while being online. Plus downloading is much faster. I'll never go back to dial-up. However it did serve me well when I had it. Lloyd

Yes, dial up connection did serve us all well during it's popular days, and too many of us tend to forget that now we have upgraded to broadband. The main problem today is that many web pages are much heavier with graphivs etectera because broadband can support them, so dial up connection must be very slow now.
