Greeting cards are a waste of money.

I always feel that people spend so much on finding really good greeting cards. In fact so much time and energy goes into finding the right greeting card. But I always feel it a waste of hard earned money, for ultimately it will either be torn up in the long run, or go into some bag in the corner of your house. With ecards, life has become so much more simpler. One can choose a nice card and send it via the net and lo, no p ostman, no courier, no cost. Yes, im sure there must be many of you who do collect all the cards and keep them safe and look over them periodically. I dont. I feel flowers and cards can be done away with, and money thus saved can be used for something better. I will propably get angry replies, but Id like to know your ideas.

i agree with this. the cost of greeting cards has increase steadily over the years and the money could be better spend in buying other stuffs for the person. i stop doing so since about 10 years ago. youngsters and teenagers may still like them but i think those adults may not. my preference for a card change with time. i used to look forward to one when i was younger but not now. i prefer something more practical. and i think ecard/emails or evem mms/sms would do the trick now to convey the message across

Welcome to the club of like thinking people chiaeugene. These days there are so many ways to send greetings to a person electronically that it beats all options. And the purpose of letting the person know you remembered his special day is also served. Thanks.

I always get alot of my cards at thrift stores. they are a whole lot cheaper and they are very nice. I only send them occasionally so it really does not cost me much at all when only sending to a few people.

Very sensible of course to pick up cards at thrift stores. Sending to very few and occassionally is ok to me. But chosing an ecard which is free is equally time consuming, finding the right one and yet you can send the message that you remembered that person on his special day.

for me greeting cards are special and i feel privileged if i receive one. like what you said, people spend time and effort to find the perfect greeting card for that special person. so receiving one simply means that you're extra special for them and that you're worth their time and effort.just my thought..

Yes robin, it i s the thought that counts, so the same previlege can be felt with an ecard also. The person knows you remembered their special occassion, and believe me, finding a right ecard is equally time consuming. Thanks.

i do like to send greetings cards to people as it shows you are thinking of them. but i do not spend a lot of money on them. really they will be just thrown away which is why i tend to go to discount card shops where they are very cheap. though i must admit i collect all of the birthday cards i get off freinds and family. happy mylotting

Ecards also show the person you are thinking of him. A little gift would go a long way than cards. You are very sentimental, thats why you are amongst the few who collect cards. Very few people would say otherwise if asked. M ost of them throw them away. Thanks.

It is your freedom to think so. I don't. I like the greeting cards of my friends especially during holidays. That makes you realize that there are many friend still think of you and bless for you.

Would receiving an ecard make you feel your friends have forgotten you and not bless you. We have gone into a long drawn assumption that what we can feel is only personalised, otherwise, it has no meaning. Id rather have tons of ecards which I can save and keep looking at when im lonely. Cheers.

I enjoy buying greeting cards. In fact I design them for a living. I still buy other designers work though as there are so many beautiful clever pieces of work out there. It's a piece of art. Affordable art! To buy a card that makes you laugh or is beautiful to look at, and to receive the same, knowing it was chosen with care, really can make your day. How great is it to get mail that is not a bill?! I don't throw out the really good ones either. And I loathe e-cards. Sorry. But if for nothing else than the fact they are ugly. Poorly designed and not something I can look at over an over. Long live the greeting card!

Since it is your bread and butter, I very much appreciate your defense. Yes, I dont say greeting cards are ugly or a waste, but mosstly people tend to throw them away. Very few actually keep them. Ive seen lovely ecards but then, being a designer yourself, you will not like them for your designs im sure must be great. May the greeting cards live long to feed you and the family. Amen.

I still seem to think that the flowers and greeting cards are a very nice way to send across a message to someone. We have got so caught up in the electronic ways of sending greetings using e cards and so on that this all seems to have lost its meaning.

It makes sense, but how many people do that? Best option would be then to buy the cards made and promoted by the organisations like the Unicef,spastics...

Alok, if the same sentiments can be sent by email and the money saved given to a needy child in that persons name. Think about it. Which is more personalised then ?

they are pretty much a waste of money..not to mention trees. sure they are nice to get and nice to give, but other than make a smile or bring a tear for a couple of minutes..thats pretty much all they do. then they are either tossed or sit in a box getting dusty for years. not much use there lol! not to mention that sometimes they can be downright outrageous in price! i found one that i thought my mother would love, but decided against it cause it was almost 6$! thats just crazy for a greeting card! i TRY to stay at the .99Cent cards, but a lot of the time none of those are a good match to who im shopping for. i also TRY not to spend over $3 for a silly card. on the other hand..e-cards are much cheaper and can be quite cute/funny/heartfelt, but they just dont seem as personal..if that makes sense loL!

Maybe our mindset has become such that we feel a thing personal only if we can touch it, thats why the feeling with ecards. Otherwise, I think we think alike. Thanks.

I am in full agreement with you on this one. I hardly ever buy greeting cards except for at xmas and then I am so lame about them that it really doesn't count. If I give a card, it is generally a blank card that I write a personal message on from my own heart. I just can't see spending time and $ sending another persons thoughts. If someone takes the time to write me their own thoughts, I'll cherish it forever but a card...unless from my kids...never is saved for long. Same with flowers. They are expensive and they just die in a short while. I think they are beautiful and I appreciate that someone cared enough to buy them for me but I'd care for the person just as much if they didn't waste their money. Go out and pick me some wildflowers...that will have more meaning . I still have a bouquet of pine branches that a friend picked me when I was going thru a tough divorce back in 1979. I preserved them in waxed paper along with a poem he wrote me. He was shocked when I recently showed him that I still have them.

Sid, friend, great minds think alike. haha. Anyway, I totally agree with you. A hand written message means so much more than just greeting cards off the shelf. You are a very sensitive person as far as I can see for you to have preserved the pine branches till date. Just wonderful. I cant do anything of that sort. Good luck and God Bless.

Yes, they are , no doubt, a waste of money, both flowers and greeting cards. However, they have resolved the problem also upto some extent, when one is in doubt about what gift to be given to a particular person. Sometimes , we are not that close to the person who has invited for any celebration, so there flowers/ greetin cards are the best option.

Id still vote for a small non personal gift like a statue or a kitchen apparatus which could be used and you remembered over time. Thanks.

I usually buy mine at the dollar store or make them myself. I find that people seem so much less likely to just toss the ones other people make by hand. I keep the cards people give me...either put them in a scrapbook or i make them into neat little crafts to keep the pretty pictures. People arent hurt when you make them into something neat rather than throwing them out...and if you keep them for years (i still have some from when i was a kid) people go what did you keep that for??? I always say because i thought it was cool or pretty. I'm a bit of a pack rat when it comes to pretty paper.

Yes, hand made ones are more appreciated than bought ones, and they fall also cheaper. They turn out prettier and made with lots of love and care. Yes, reuseing them or putting them into a scrap book is a very good idea. Cheers.

I don't really buy cards any more I would prefer to spend that extra money on the gift rather then see it get thrown away ,thats four dollers plus in the bin ,that I can use else-where. cheers.

I didn't buy cards for some time around. before that i didn't have the habit of giving them. so when i started off i started making my own cards. might be with poems or articles-like for the friend's birthday. they loved it. but then i lost time as i am working. now a days i don't seem to have time to allocate for that. sooner or later i would like to start all over again.

The best way is to make your own cards which you used to do. They are so much more personal, but then again they must be preserved by your freinds, or all your work goes down the drain which is more hurting. Now that you are so busy, try ecards. They are really good and free.

i guess it's the thought that counts, and not the amount you spent on the card. and there are some situations where we could use the net for sending cards... but for my family, i guess, it would be great to give them cards with thoughts that we really mean to say... my daughter is making her own greeting cards and she designed it the way she want to...

Its always best to make your own cards for the feeling of love is hidden in its depth. no matter how much we want, a hand made card is always better. I suppose for the family anything goes. Love to your daughter.

If it is a run of the mill birthday card for a family member or friend. No special reason. Just Christmas or Birthday, then I agree. I prefer to spend the £3-5 on an additional small gift for them.

Hi kety, When I was a kid and my Father works far from us, we always send him card and received card form him and we always try to find the nicest card in the store...When I was working already and saw all these cards with our hand writings when we were small, I felt happy and amaze with all those messages we exchanged for each other and even until now, we still have those cards in my Parents' house! I don't mind giving my parents and sister expensive cards but for my friends, I prefer saving my money and just send them e card! Since, when I moved, I have tried throwing those cards I got from my friends in high school and when I was in college!

It happens all the time. Yes, i can understand how you must have felt seening your written cards to your father, especially when so young. I guess, with very near and dear ones, an occassional card is ok, but with friends, i too read them, and ultimately end in the thrash can. thanks.

NO!!! Who tears up greeting cards? Do people really do that? I love buying greeting cards for my friends I think it's way better than just sending an email because they can keep it forever! I better not hear about my friends tearing up the letters and notes i sent them or else!!! But you're right. Greeting cards cost a lot of money. The good ones are almost like $5 already which I can just use to buy a loaf of bread, some cheese, and some slices of ham!

I hope for your sake, your friends are keeping your letters and cards safely. Id hate to burst your bubble, but i doubt it. Some may be doing it, some may not. Yes, imagine if the same amount could be given to a poor hungry person in your friends name, think of the blessings he/she would get from a hungry soul.

I used to make my cards on the computer but that got to be a lot of work. I enjoyed it but I can't think of things to put on them. Also the ink got to be expensive for the printer. Now I buy cards. I like to buy the variety kind not the ones that look all alike in one box. I don't mind sending out cards each year. That's about the only time I send out any and theirs not that many - about 20 or so. I like getting cards in the mail. To me it seems more personal than just emailing one. Plus, most of my family don't have the internet so I can's email them. I hang my cards up so I can look at them during the holiday. I also have trouble finding a good ecard that I can send to someone.
• India
21 Nov 08
Yes, I can understand this problem of not being able to send cards on email because of no internet. I somehow find it difficult to choose an ecard with so many varieties today. All really good and meanigful. I usually save them on my computer, so I can see them whenever I want to. Thanks.

Dollar store cards for me. I cannot afford to spend several dollars for a fancy card that has the fancy name on the back. It is such a shame they are one use only. I would like to try to print cards form my computer then I can personalize it with family photos and such. A real card is so much better than an electronic one. Besides I do not open the electronic cards as spammers are sending viruses in them now they ask you to open a card and it is a virus.
• India
21 Nov 08
So long as the real card is collected and kept with love and affection, its ok to spend a little now and then, but a gift of the same value would be more appreciated. Ive never had any virus in opening ecards which I have in plenty. thanks.
