I think....it is not because they need less rest. I know that they want to sleep longer but their body just cant do it. They hate to be awake so early in the morning (sometimes midnight), but they can't go back too sleep.
If you notice them....they also eat less than us.

My grandfather is a retired postal carrier. For most of his adult life he was up and out before the sun. We are talking about 4:00 am. And he still does it. I think alot of it may be habit.

Hello radon. It is the same with my senior father, who is eighty two years old and gets us very early in the morning. Usually he gets up at about the same time as your grandpa does. There were two nights when I lived in my parents apartment to find this. I was waken up by my father. It is the same with him all the year round. After getting up, my father brushes teeth, washes face and goes to the city park to jog and walk for many circles. He usually leaves at about four in the morning and won't come back until after seven or eight. My father does not go out if it happens to rain. Then he will do some exercise at home. My father is really funny. lol

When you are young,You are more active, lose energy of it and you have to sleep more to get your metabolism get right. With older people they lose less energy and their body metabolism has almost come to an end.So they get early out of bed even if they are late. There is also one more reason, you can add about it.Grown old, they may think, they have only few days left and they are trying to live more out of a day by simply getting early and retiring late to bed.
