What is the best method for training your pet?

I do not have a puppy, I have a nine year old rotty/husky mix and the other day my mother and I got into a HUGE argument over the best way to train your pet. I trained my dog by keeping her on a leash and with me at practically all times. When she would do something wrong I would pull on the leash a little and use my stern voice to tell her NO. When she did something good I would give her slack and coddle her. And she is a GREAT dog (I used treats and other things too) but my mom says hitting them and leaving them outside chained to a tree ALL DAY-as punishment is the best way to train them. I disagree-I think that's abusive. What do you guys think? What methods do you use in training your pets?

i dont think hitting them and chaining them up is a good idea as it makes them into timid dogs.they may also get agressive towards other people.but a tap to let them know that they have done wrong is ok.
when ever we are out and about we use a lead and do the same as you have with your dog.but i never use a lead in the house.i think they should have the right to some freedom.
we are getting there with our puppies but its takeing a long time.the seem to egg each other on to cause mischeif

Your mother is setting herself up to be prosecuted for animal cruelty if she ever uses her method of "dog training". Your method is excellent. It teaches the dog to trust and obey you. Dogs only respong to one-word commands and lots of love so you are doing everything right.
I rehabilitate animals that have been abused-dogs, cats, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, ponies, chickens, and geese. All respond well to consistant gentle love and one-word commands

Thanks for your reply. I agree that what my mother is doing is not right and I have told her that chaining the dog out all day is neglect and that hitting the dog (more than a tap) is abuse. Since I spoke to her she no longer hits the dog but she still leaves the poor thing chained all the time. My mom is disabled and unable to train the dog as attentively as someone else would; I recommended that she adopted a dog that is already trained and give Pandy (her dog now) a fair chance to grow up right. Having a pet is just like having a child, and my mom would never leave a child chained all day. She's considering my advice and in the mean time I take Pandy whenever I can and give her love, attention, and discipline.
I would also like to add a thank you, for caring for those animals that others leave behind. That is very noble and you should be commended as it is usually a very hard job although not thankless.
Oh and welcome to MyLot, let me know if you need any help. I'm kind of new but I think I have it down.

thats crazy way of training ways your mother has in her mind.... that definately is abusive...the way u train.... its the best way...treats would help but i guess by now your dog should be fully trained.... actually most doctors say that a dog can be trained a tthe age of 4 months.... but i have also successfull trained my lab which is now 6 years old at the age of 4 n half years old..... so it all depends on love and understanding...thats all..... :)
