I do not believe you can love someone you have never met in person. You can love their personality and their mind but you need to meet them and spend time with them to truly know a person and love them.
Online is a great place to meet people and get to know them in comparative safety but that is just stage 1. Stage 2 is meeting in person and seeing if there is any chemistry. It is in effect the reverse of most dating. Most people meet someone and hit it off then they have to get to know them.
I have met many people online including my present partner and I think it is a great way to meet people especially if you are not into going out much.

I'm not really sure if you can love the person or not (I think that in most cases, you don't), but I know that it's hard to make the relationship work out.
It's hard to tell whether you like the person for who they really are or for their typing and personality on the Internet. It's hard to really fall in love with someone who's really just text on a screen. An important part of talking with anyone in general, is being able to see their reactions, their expressions and their gestures. This is what makes up the bulk of any conversation, even though we don't notice it - words count for only about 7%.
Evidently, Internet dating has worked out in some cases for people. Those people are the ones that usually live in the same country or whose families don't have a problem with it. In most online relationships, however, there's a lot of obstacles in the way.
Internet love is not impossible, but I think it's highly unlikely that anything of the nature can develop into a true relationship. =P
