I found a brand new bike parked on my property

Something odd happened today. After dropping the kids off to school, I realized I have extra time so I should stop by the house again before heading to the freeway to work. I can drop by and water the gardens in the morning. So I finished the front yard and took the route through the side of the house to head to the back yard. I have not walked on the side of the house for over 6 months, well guess what I saw? I saw a brand new adult bike next to my house. My house is surrounded by brick walls for privacy. So how did this brand new bike get here? It was parked. It was not my son’s bike, because his is in the patio. If a neighbor is using my property to park their equipment, did they think we won’t notice? I mean, though it is private property, the gates to the back are unlock. I wonder who the bike belongs to? My husband will not buy a bike, he does not need one. I wanted to take the bike and hide it and see if anybody will come and ask us... I am curious, but I had to leave because I had to get back to work. If it is still there tonight, I might hide it when I get home. Whoever is parking it there is tresspassing on private property

I'm a bit late responding to this discussion, but I have to ask, was the bike still there when you got home or did the owner come back for it? My husband found a bike in our yard several years ago. It was hidden in our hedge. Although it wasn't new, it was in good shape. Why anyone would leave it there, neither of us know. We live out in the country so it's not like we have a lot of neighbors around us. Anyway, we took the bike in. No one ever did come by to claim it.

Wow, really? Bike riding can be a lot of fun. Good luck with it, if you do decide to learn.

thanks, I think I am going to try, but it is so scary since I never had a bike. As a child I never got one so bike riding for me is scary. I might need to put training wheels on to get started.

It could be a stolen bike. I would knock on the neighbors' doors and ask if it belongs to them. If so, kindly ask them not to park their bike there. If not, call the police and report it and let them take it from there. There could be an existing report of a stolen bike and they'll be able to return it to it's owner. Good luck!

Oh that is a good idea. I did not realize that it could be stolen bike, you have a good point. I better check back with the neighbors and have them describe the bike to me If they claim it belongs to them. How mean of someone to steal a bike and then store it on my property. I could get in a lot of trouble for it

Yeah, you wouldn't likely get in trouble for it, especially if you take the right actions. They may have stolen it and then needed to "ditch" it to avoid getting caught. I transcribe police reports and see this happen all the time. If it's an expensive bike, the police are likely to have the serial number on file and will be able to locate the owner quickly. Good luck! I'd be interested in hearing what happens! :)
