Most people speak slower than normal, are stuttering a little bit and keep repeating things that they've said before. They don't dare to look you straight into your eyes (be careful! some can!) and will try to avoid looking at you. They also use their hands to explain things more often than when telling the truth.

I feel that too. And one reason why I can say that someone is lying when he can't look me straight to my eye.

A very nice one, this discussion. I always feel that catching a person lying is very easy. I'll tell you my way of catching someone lying. Jus look into his/her eyes without hesitation in your eyes, as if showing him/her that you care for them and it matters to you if they lie. If they are lying, they'll surely try to break eye contact. It works best if the lier is your friend or you know him.
Happy mylotting buddy...

What I've noticed is that you can hear something in their voice that sounds unsure. They look off to the side or down. They can be argumentative and act like you're attacking them... Fidgety... That's all I can think of.

Let me first say you cannot usually catch a professional lier. Politicians fall into that class, they are so adept at shading the truth and we believe them because they do not give off any of the flags that say they are lying. The only way you can tell if a politician is lying is that their lips are moving.
However most of us are usually amateurs and lying so we do not know what signals we give off. Apparently one side of your brain is creative and one side is memory. You are supposed to be able to tell which side is being used when they look up momentarily. I can never remember which side is which, but look at someone and you will see the eyes go up to the left or right.
How I usually tell is the throat clearing. When you are nervous your throat goes dry and people try and clear their throat and nothing is there, it is just a dry throat. Another thing, the lie is usually preceded by the phrase "the truth is ... "
Of course there is the usual shuffling and looking down but this seems to be more for children, I think think the more mature liers outgrow this. I often wonder about pathological liers as they are so used to lieing whether you can tell with them.
