Do you keep your craft supplies organized or are they scattered about?

I have recently tried to organized my knitting supplies. My method was pretty crude: I got 2 boxes--into one I placed all purse handles (I knit alot of purses) and all purse lining materials. I also placed left-over beads and yarn scraps (really small amounts in that box. In the second box, I arranged all my un-knitted yarn skeins. I placed them so the ends of the skeins are sticking up out of the box so that, at a glance, I can find a color or type of yarn. Then, I covered the top over with a large bag to keep the yarn from getting dusty. My current projects are all in my large knitting supply bag, so when I want to knit, I just grab that.
Are your crafting supplies organized or not? If they are, how have you organized them? Plastic bins, sacks?

My supplies are definitely not organized. My painting stuff is shoved behind a chair at a friends house, my knitting needles are at the bottom of a bag somewhere. My yarn is everywhere but my pants... Even the tackle box I have that was to have my beads stay organized tumbled off the bed and it looks like a unicorn pooped in a box.

I love it, a unicorn's droppings! LOL. My craft stuff was so disorganized that I could hardly do anything, it would take so long to rummage through it all to find what I was looking for. I guess we "crafters" can get a little messy, huh? Thanks for responding.

Sorry I am so far behind in responding to your discussion. Hope the ankle is mending well.
My completed craft projects and craft supplies are scattered all over in a bedroom, garage and the family room closet. Everything is marked and I have samples with the original patterns. I work with plastic canvas and do some knitting. In order to keep my yarn in one room I decided to put the skeins in plastic bins. The photo below will give you some idea of what it looks like although it looks unkept I do know where everything is located. The flat, plastic containers are kept under a spare bed in another room with labeling right on the front so I can see exactly what's in each container. I try real hard to keep my crafts in order but once in awhile things get away from me and I get sloppy.

Hello carolbee. I know how easy it is to get behind. I haven't been on here in almost 2 weeks! You are so thoughtful to remember by ankle. It's healing pretty well. I just completed the 3 weeks in the boot cast and was so glad to get out of it. I still have some soreness in the ankle but am hoping that will fade.
It sounds like you are so organized with all your craft materials and projects. I like the idea of using the plastic bins for the yarn because you can pretty much see in them for what you are looking for. I am going to work on keeping my supplies down so I don't have to keep expanding the space to keep it all.
Thanks for sharing.

I know what you mean, it seems like I spend alot of time organizing and very little time messing it up. Yet somehow, it gets right back to where I started, messy! I will say that it sure has been nice to be able to know pretty much where everything is and go right to it when I need it. I'm wondering how long it will stay this way. Take care and thanks.

I'd like to say that even though my supplies (which now encompass two rooms)look to be a huge mess... I know where everything is.
But I'd be fibbing. I sort of know where everything is. I spent over 3 hours organizing my supplies, just a few weeks ago. That didn't last much more than a week. Now I have boxes of supplies stacked in a corner of my dining room and I can't even get near my totes to put them away. My crafting has moved from my little crafting room to the dining room, as my crafting table has been over-run with supplies and displays for shows.
I think it would take me twice as long to clean my craft room, as it would to clean the house...

Gosh, you sound like one serious crafter! Two rooms full of crafting supplies is pretty impressive! I can't even imagine what it would be like to try to find a tool or supply or something if it wasn't all organized. Suddenly, I am very relieved to have just 2 boxes plus my knitting bag of supplies and projects. Thanks and take care.

Well, actually, my craft room is pretty small (approx 10 x 7)It holds all my totes of supplies and all of my craft show "stuff"... different size tables, a couple of chairs and all my displays, along with my finished products.
It looks like a bomb went off in there, though. I've poured out all of skeins of yarn on one table and the 2nd table is packed with jewelry supplies.
The dining room isn't exactly packed, but there is quite a bit of supplies along the back end of the the table. Once the holiday craft show season is over and I can put away all my "stuff", I'll be able to clean up my huge supply mess (and that should help me work a bit effiecently... I spent over 45 minutes looking for my red sea glass)

When not working and being stored, I am pretty organized. Howver, while working...Clean House would have a blast in my room or area! I figure, why waste time cleaning as I go, just throw it on the floor and vaccum it later all at once! Works out pretty good! And why put things away as I use them.. I know in a few minutes later I will need that again, so why waste the time gettin gup and putting it away just to do it again later! Seems also easy enough to pick up when done too!

Right now I am just starting out with crocheting. I hope I don't get too bad where I need a lot of space, I hope just a container will do, but then where would I put the container. There's no under to our bed since the boxspring is in a box.. oh well. I like your organization skills though.

Hello SomeCowgirl. It's always fun to start a new hobby. I'm mostly a knitter but recently, I had to crochet around the edges of a few knitting projects so now, I'm all ready to start crocheting, too! When I first started knitting, I just kept a small tote bag with everything in it. Those days are long gone. Now, I've got 2 cardboard boxes, but they work out great.
Appreciate your comments.

Glad they work how great for you, now that you have a new hobby though, you might get more! I know that Crochet hooks and Knitting Needles are different, but I think that you can do crochet on knitting needles. There's a site crochetnit that puts both together, knitting with crochet style stitches.
I saw a blog once with a person who had a nice system for keeping her area neat... it wasn't too long ago actually, she used magazine boxes, the cardboard ones that you see in stores?

I do and I don't. I know where things are and can get to them but at the same time some of it isn't very organized. I just have way too many crafts I like to do...cross stitch, plastic canvas, crocheting, quilting, ect. I really need to pick 2 and clear out the rest.

You sound like quite the crafter! It's great that you have the space and time to do a variety of crafts. We don't live in a big house anymore so I really limit the amount of "stuff" that I keep. I've got all my knitting supplies sorted into a couple of boxes on the floor of our master bathroom closet and it fits perfectly!

I do have most of them organized..but there is so much stuff! I have my rubber stamps in containers according to holiday etc....I have a whole room dedicated to my crafting things.....so most of it is in containers and marked....I just did a craft sale however and toward the end of getting ready some things do get misplaced. Hopefully tonight I can go in and finish reorganizing so I can start all of my own Christmas crafts.....if I just don't get company I'll be able to at least start!

Organizing does seem more important when you have a whole room full of craft supplies. Wow, that is so cool! It sounds like you have quite the system. Hope you get a great start on your Christmas crafts. It's fun to have company but sometimes, my "head" is so far in to a project that it's hard to be entertaining. Take care.

I am so anxious to get my craft supplies organized, but I have to put it off a bit longer. I am doing a lot of remodeling and redecorating that the supplies have been stored in Rubber Maid bins. I love them as they keep the stuff clean and in one spot. All my knitting supplies are in the containers. My bear making supplies are scattered. I have used a bunch of Altoids tins for organizing the smaller items. That way they can be sorted and I can make a note on the top of the tin what is inside. My BF uses Altoids so I have a huge supply of the tins. I don't use sacks as the cats love them...and cardboard is out because Khuay (one of the two flame point Siamese that own me) is a reincarnated CIA agent and no cardboard box, paper bag, envelope, or piece of paper doesn't go unchecked. He will shred anything paper with abandon...leaving little pieces on the floor like a multicolored snow fall. He also is a terror with paper towels...He can shred a full roll in less than 30 seconds flat. Yet, he can look so cute and innocent...
When I get my Christmas break from college (Yep, I'm 56 years old and going to college...it may take me a while but I do get back to things eventually) I am going to tear out the kitchen and redo the walls and put in new cupboards. The bathroom is second on the list with a new vanity, toilet, refinishing the tub and new walls. Then the carpet gets torn out and replaced in the work room, office, and the master bedroom. When it is done then I will set up the work room again and I am buying a bunch of shelving from Ikea to store the fur for the bears and the other crafting supplies. Then of course the kitchen and family room will have laminate flooring installed.
I am sooo looking forward to getting the whole house organized, especially the crafts room.

Hello Loverbear.
It sounds like your craft supplies are at least somewhat organized for now. I love the altoids idea!
The story about your cat is so funny, he sounds like a fantastic pet.
Well, if you are in college, you have alot more important things to do than crafting, that's for sure. That is wonderful. I hope you meet your educational goals.
We completely remodeled our kitchen about a year and a half ago and it is now wonderful. We enjoy it so very much and feel very proud that we planned it out so well. We had contractors do the work but we designed how/where we wanted everything.
We have 2 bathrooms left to go and I've just been lazy on calling the contractor out for an estimate. We've pretty much decided what changes we want and we'll have the bathrooms remodeled one at a time (guest bathroom first).
Good luck with all your organizing, Loverbear. Thanks for responding.

Unfortunately mine are scattered about. I have a bag for each project and now there are bags all over the place.

Hi PearlGrace, I do not do much crafting so I have a basket that fits perfectly between my dressing table and wardrobe in my bedroom and I keep everything in there. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi ellie333. Your basket of craft materials sounds like the perfect place for them! Ah, to have the uncomplicated knitting bag that holds everything I own related to knitting. Those were the good ole days...

Hello
Back when I still lived with my parents I used to make handmade soaps . I had so many oils, herbs, wraps, molds, and ribbons . I used to keep them in 2 big plastic tubes in the basement . I also used to have a smaller kit with things i was just working with then .

I am a scatterer. It's pretty bad too. My "stash" is totally NOT stashed, it is all over! :) I lie to console myself with the old saying that a messy desk is a sign of a creative mind... except mine isn't confined to just my desk.

Hello Paula1966. Well, you certainly aren't the first crafter that has craft supplies scattered from one end of the house to the other. I just decided that I wanted it to be easier to just grab a project I'm working on instead of digging through 10 or 12 sacks. It's gone so much more smoothly once I sorted everything out and figured out how to most efficiently store what I have. I seem to be more efficient if my supplies and things are "centralized." Take care.
