How can you tell a real smile from a phony one?

Check your eyes. A genuine warm smile is usually accompanied by slight changes around the outer corners of the eyes that communicate sincerely. And even a broad smile isn't convincing unless the eyebrows also are raised.

you can also tell by the personality i believe. i mean someone who is just smiling (phony smile) is like just being nice and isn't going to say anything to whatever made them to pretend to smile, so they are generally more quiet. and then a real smile is seen when the person uses not only body gestures but also verbal speech and approves fully of the subject at hand, they will be more into the subject than the one who is just standing on the corner of the subject just smiling.
