Pushing For A Cure

One of my best friends, whom I've mentioned previously here, has a daughter who is almost eighteen. She is one of 'my daughter's' closest friends, and they are both in their senior high school year. This young lady developed a cyst on her ovary, this past spring. The cyst ruptured, and she was tested and treated at the hospital. The ultrasound also showed a scar on her liver, at that time. She was feeling quite well again, but since the fall her symptoms have reoccurred. One of these symptoms is abdominal pain. She's also suffering from severe fatigue. She has just had another ultrasound. The scar on her liver is still there. In addition to this scar, the latest ultrasound has revealed 'fluid in her abdominal cavity.' Her family doctor (who is about to retire), doesn't think this is a big deal, and is not doing any further tests. She continues to feel unwell, and has only attended school approximately one or two days per week, for the past couple of months. Her school work is starting to suffer, and she could lose her year due to this. She has 'never' been referred to a specialist. In this case, it should be an OB GYN. Her mom is going to insist that she see this specialist. She'll need a referral from a family doctor. I've looked up 'fluid in the abdominal cavity' online, and find the results disturbing. 'They' need to be taken seriously. Have you or a loved one, ever been 'put off' by your family doctor, or any doctor? Did you stand up for your rights, and insist on seeing a specialist? What were the end results of your actions?

Yes I was last year February with my Gall Bladder and had to suffer for over a year until I got rushed into Hospital and then I was sent to a specialist and in June it this year it was removed 18 months I had to suffer severe Pain before something was eventually done I really hope that the Girl will get the right care, tell your Friend to keep demanding and also what might help is take the Girl to the Hospital as an Emergency as that will push it to Every time the Girl is not well take her to the Doctor and keep demanding for her seeing a Specialist It sounds like she needs to get there soon and I can not understand why the Doctor is not sending her Also I suggest getting another Opinion from another Doctor, I know it sounds a lot but she needs to take every Avenue Hugs

Hi gabs, I certainly do remember what happened with your gall bladder, and all of the needless suffering you experienced. This type of thing just shouldn't be happening to people. This is my friend Barb's daughter, that I am speaking of. I'm sure you'll recall, that she has just gone through a scare with her own health, regarding her lungs. Now this! Her daughter isn't at all well, and it's a real concern for her mom, and those who care for this family. I am in that number. You've given some good suggestions here, and I will pass them on to my friend. I 'was' hoping to get various perspectives on the situation, so I'll see. Thanks so much for responding here. I really appreciate it. Take care. How are you doing, by the way? Hugs

I've been having a lot of leg pain etc., for the last little while. More than usual, which is making it even harder for me to get around. I may have to look into getting another specialist (the right kind) for myself, in the new year. I spoke with Barb on the phone last night, and she's really worried. Her daughter was feeling just awful on Friday. She's going to have one more 'talk' with her family doctor this next week. If he won't do anything, they're going to seek another doctor (through a clinic or hospital emergency dept.) Hugs

Honest to GOD! I was sick all the TIME after I hit puberty and we didn't need referals back then! It was only when I decided to take myself to an allergist that I found that most of my problems were from my allergies to foods! I'd've probably gotten better grades in school if I hadn't felt like sh*t all the time! As for referals, most insurance doesn't require ones to OBGYNs, have your friend call and double check with the insurance company on that!

Hi ElicBxn, It'd be great not to need referrals. This would sure take care of family doctors who aren't willing to give them. I know some would abuse this system, but surely they could be weeded out, and those who need the help would get it. Here in Canada (Ontario), we have universal health coverage, which is a good thing. The government pays for 'everyone's' health needs. One of the requirements is these referrals to specialists, so the family doctor must be willing to do this. We also have very long waiting lists at times too. However, I can't imagine the alternative, as there's no way I could pay for health insurance, and many can't. Thanks for sharing here. Take care.

Thanks for the additional information. I do wish you all of the best, in getting the referral you need. I trust they will be able to do something to help you with your leg condition. I 'know' where you're coming from in this. Take care.

Well, its only OBGYNs and shrinks that don't need referals for, the rest do. Now, I'm considering getting a referal to a nerve guy because of my on going problem with my leg. On going since I've had this numbness problem since the early 1980's! Its just that it has recently gotten worse! - like since October!

Fortunately I haven't had the need to insist on seeing a specialist. Your friend's daughter may have something serious going on. A bell went of when you said she had fluid in her abdominal cavity. One of my friends had her husband pass away a few months ago. The found fluid in his abdominal cavity and it was due to his having pancreatic cancer. Your friend should put on her boxing gloves and put up a fight. I hope she can see a specialist soon. Keep us posted.

Hi winterose, It sounds like you have a wonderful family doctor. I'm very happy to hear this. As for my friend's family doctor, I just don't understand what's wrong with him. Her daughter is clearly ill, and isn't getting any better. Thanks for your response, as always. Hugs

Thanks for sharing this with us here Mom! I do hope that you get some more responses.... Hard to believe that I am number four here in basically twenty four hours! I know you know the story but in case anyone else here decides to read this I have much experience in pushing doctors and getting second opinions! It has become apparent to me that many family doctors are very inept at paying attention to detail or caring about giving a proper diagnosis! I appalled at I and others I know have gone through with Doctors and Hospitals...It is really ridiculous and unnecessary in my opinion! Losing test results, ignoring the patient, calling the patient a liar etc, no beside manner at all, impatient and in a hurry, careless!!!! This is my estimation of today's medical field in general and it is a sad case of affairs really! Anyhow, I digress to some degree...I'll get right to my experience here now! I had a family doctor when my son was who seemed fine until he started to basically tell me I was out of my mind in my worries about my son! I would bring my concerns to him and he would dismiss it saying that he was fine and when next we saw him our boy would be progressing...This went on until he was eighteen months at which time he said my boy may be a bit delayed in his speech and so he got us on a wait list for speech therapy! This was a start but not enough for me and so I got in contact with another family doctor who believed what I was saying and referred us to a developmental pediatrician who took us very seriously and did a battery of blood tests followed by referring us to a specialist who diagnosed our boy with severe autism and developmental delay at two years and five months! I had concerns from as early as five months and feeding difficulties literally from birth but no one would listen! I could have had my diagnosis a good year or more earlier but I did well to push as I did as that was a good young age and he has come so far...I continue to fight with the school system on several levels for his education also! Pushing for a cure, pushing for a diagnosis, pushing for proper care it's all the same and should not be a reality but it is!!!! I truly hope that Barb gets down to the bottom of this and fast!!! You know my prayers are with that family on many levels and for many reasons! Love and Hugs TO You! ~Heavens~

Thanks so much for this, heavens. It's a very enlightening read, for those who take the time. I well remember what you went through with your 'family doctor.' That man was so into ignoring things (and I experienced this too), that I have no words to describe his 'medical skills.' Questionable at best, but pathetic actually. I shudder to think what would've happened with your son, if you hadn't pushed like you needed to. I'm so hoping that Barb will get this looked after this week, and a specialist's appointment will be set up. They need to get her daughter in ASAP. Unfortunately, as you know, Barb already has way too much to deal with. This daughter isn't the only family member who needs help. She (Barb) is at her wits end, and who can blame her. My title "Pushing For A Cure," in this case, is because I 'must' believe that her daughter will be diagnosed, treated, and that her health will be completely restored. Thanks again. I do feel good about the caring responses I've received here. At least I've gotten 'a few' opinions and insights. Love and Hugs

That does not sound good to me. The major reason she could have fluid in the abdomen is cancer of the ovaries. She needs to be checked out and fast. Please get this girl to a specialist and fast. I do not know what the scar on the liver means I have not ever heard of that. If something is majorly wrong and that doctor poo pooed it I would sue him big time.

Hi teapotmom, Thanks so much for your concern. The good news is, her mom has found her a new (female) doctor. This woman is very thorough, and has already done blood work, and tested her urine. The urine revealed a bladder infection, which she's taking meds for. She's also taking an anti inflammatory. This new family doctor is going to be sending her to a specialist as well. It'll be the OBGYN that she needs. Thanks again. Take care.
