Practice is the most important thing. I've had no formal typing training but, as with most people, typing for years at home has made it easy to type quickly.

Well, I didn't go through any proper typing lessons. I learned typing through chatting. I used to chat a lot with friends in Internet, and the more I chat, the faster I type. I believe practise makes perfect. So, you can keep writing here, practise more will improve your typing. Perhaps you can also download some typing lessons from the Internet, it's very easy to find in the net nowadays. Having some basic typing knowledge may help you to improve faster too. ^_^

I improved mine quite abit by purchasing the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing CD. It has helped me alot. It has several levels, different types of practices. Really worth it.

practice. I did it by chatting. Keeping up with conversations really gets your fingers, and brain working together. typing tutors are another way, but very unrealistic.

I learned how to type when I was in kindergarten, but most of my friends didn't truly learn--or learn the "correct" way--until their freshman year of high school. I had no idea how useful my typing skills would be later on in life. I don't know anything about typing programs that you can download off of the internet...however, the key aspect of any avenue you pursue to improve your typing is blinding yourself from the keyboard. And I mean, literally, covering up your hands so that you cannot see what you are typing (this will serve to eliminate the hunt-and-peck method you are probably so desperately trying to get away from). If you force yourself to go through the program(s) this way, you will be able to improve your accuracy along with your speed.
