Why don't you believe?

I often am asked this question, specifically on the internet because, on MyLot, I am more likely to get into discussions about religion and my lack thereof.
It's like this: If you believe, most of the time, it won't be questioned, but if you don't, you're going to get questioned a lot. But there is really nothing wrong with that.
I think it is very easy for me to understand why someone would believe in God. I've been there before. It's not absurd or crazy to me. It's just something that a lot of people need to live. I'm just different.
But I think it's a lot harder for someone who believes in God [or Allah, etc] to say they don't understand why someone would not, because most of the time they have not been there before, or they just aren't in any position to understand it. So I think it makes perfect sense that I get asked this question a lot.
I mean, I really don't mind when the person asking is polite and seems to just be looking for an understanding of the other side. I hate it, though, when the other person is really just acting as though I'm in court, and they're surveying this terrible "crime" I have committed of admitting that I live differently than them.
I can just imagine some people clutching a crucifix with a bottle of holy water, jumping on a plane to come fix my terrible "mistake" and heal my "poisoned mind." which is just the thing that's going to turn me off and just not talk to the person. But if they just want to know, it's no problem, and I would love to talk about it as it is. I don't try to convert anyone or tell anyone that I'm right, I just explain it!
But I'll admit there are people who do it the wrong way on either side, I'm not pointing fingers or naming names. But don't you agree, isn't it better to just learn what you can before jumping on a person just for thinking differently?

My reason for not believing is the lack of evidence to force me to conclude the existence of a deity or deities. Simple as that.

Hi Sheepie,
Yes I agree with you, as I am a pagan and I don't ram down anyones throat and I do believe in God, but I don't go on about it.

I don't believe because it is better to know. To believe is to be lie to and if I believe, I am at someone the mercy of what they want to tell me. If I tell you anything now you have to believe or not. Until it is proven to be true then its a fact and there nothing else to believe, you will know.

"Whether or not God exists is not what really matters. It's about living life and generating love."
Precisely it's because of love that some people would like you to believe in what they believe because they want you to experience what good they're experiencing. But you're right when you say that some people overdo it. They give warnings of doom and they act as if you're a virus to be eliminated before you can contaminate. I just hope that in this lifetime, you meet someone or some people who will accept you as you are, who will be open to your non-belief and who will not convert you with their righteous words, but will touch your heart through their kindness and understanding, and will eventually lead you to ask "Why are they kind and understanding?"

As a believer, I think it will be non-sense if I talk about what I believe in if it is not seen in my actions. Online, I see to it that I don't give false identity, I want everything right. I see to it that I pay responsibilities in each action that I take.
I always respect anyone's belief. I also wanted others to respect mine. But I know I can't please everybody, but I believe God exist, so be it.
