Reading to children

I love reading to children... groups of children, my own child, anyone child who will listen. I enjoy doing voices and being dramatic. Most of all I enjoy creating suspense and watching little faces long to hear what is coming next. It's easy, you can make a child sit absolutely on the end of their seat waiting to hear if the ball on the next page will be red or yellow, if done correctly.
I started this discussion in 'reading'. What is it about reading that you are just completely passionate about? An author?, a series?, the library?...... what?

i am a history fanatic and pretty much only read non fiction history books. also, that is pretty much all i watch on tv too. as for reading, have you thought about volunteering at the library? you could also teach english as a second language too maybe?

Yes, as a matter of fact I am on call with my library for when the staff employee is ever not available for story time. My church has an English as a Second language program for the community and I do some volunteering with them now and then. There are mostly adults in the program but once in a while they get an influx of school aged kids.

I enjoy reading to my grand children - more than that I love it when they read back to me! Both mine love books and reading so we sit literraly for an hour or so reading to them - THing is they never tire of the books - I do after about the 50th time in one day of reading the same book! I let them choose what books they want to read. I have a shelf with books for them and we call it the "library" and they can choose whatever they like.
Another thing my 2 yo loves is me telling her stories about characters she knos and loves. Right now, Cordoroy bear (she loves the book) and Silkie Bear (a toy softie daddy bought her) are the characters that go on adventurse ala Raggedy And nad Andy and leaving Marcellas room and all. She loves it and asks for those stories al the time!
reading isn't fundamental - it is amazing, wonderful, enjoyable, snuggleable and lots and lots of fun for the reader and the readee!!

It is one of the funnest times you can have with your kids or grand kids. And the younger the funner! Especially when they ask you to "tell" a story, not read one!

I would have to say that I am passionate about reading in general. I if had to pick one part about it though, it would be crime novels. I like true crime novels, but I also like crime novels that may not be true.

I used to be in Reading Tutor Lab, a class in my high school where we would go and tutor little kids at an elementary school on reading and writing basically. It was a pretty cool experience interacting with little kids and teaching them things. It made me feel smart and I hope I made them feel smart in return.

I did some of my graduate research in a high school Reading Tutor Lab. It really is a great experience for all participants. I know the little kids adored the older ones and it meants so much to them.

Like you I also like reading stories to children. It's not common to see men having this passion but I do. Maybe because I took care of my younger siblings before that I got familiar with dealing with them. Actually, it's not just story telling that I enjoy but teaching children as well. I just find it fun sharing to children the things I know.

Good for you! I believe that reading to children (even at very young ages) is the best gift we give to them. I also, enjoy reading and doing the characters for young kids. I have read to all of my siblings' and friends' children as well as my own. My son was correcting my mother and sister if they didn't read ALL of his favorite story (no skipping!) by the time he was 2! I am just passionate about reading - in any form, any place, any type. I have always been a reader and read constantly for pleasure. I am the only one in my family who has always loved reading. I have many authors I love and genres. I salute you for passing the gift of reading on to the the next generation! Keep up the good work.

Yes, I love reading too. This has been one of my favorite hobbies ever since I was a little girl. It kind of went away as I got so older. But, I do love reading to my kids all of the time. I really want to do this more with them. I believe that it is very fun and exciting. Children learn so much at this age and they are very eager to learn too. I love reading many suspense novels in my own time. I like to read stories that have to do with mystery and thriller type like books. I am very glad that you have a very strong passion when it comes to reading to children. You are a very smart person.! Keep up the good work!

well reading keeps my nieces quiet for about an half hour. But on a real, what i enjoy about reading, a book can make you feel like if your traveling the world. A book takes you to so many different places, times and a walk through peoples lives. On mylot for example reading people discussions makes me sit in that persons shoes for a while. Mainly those who post discussion on their personal lives. It helps you understand what one is feeling in their discussion.

Hi, jessieBee.
I enjoy the 'traveling the world' aspect of reading too. I agree that sometimes I can feel like I'm traveling the world, even here on myLot.

I was very fortunate to be read to a lot when I was a child. My mother read to me almost every night (if I got ready for bed fast enough...lol). She read fantasies and fairytales mostly. In school (in the primary grades), we had a teacher who would read factual accounts of historical events to the class. Through her passions and skill, we would almost feel like we'd witnessed these events.
To this day I am still passionate about reading. I love the library, the smell of new books, various authors, etc. There isn't anything I don't like about reading.

my mom used to read us bed time stories. And it's true it's fun hearing it. I even tell my mom to re read it again even if I heard it many times. Godspeed...

I often hear a sweet little "again, again" from my son when I read him bed time stories. Even when it is a story we read almost nightly.
I love this special time with him.

When you mentioned reading for kids, it remind me reading for my daughter when she was small. She really enjoyed my night stories and reading for her.
I didn't miss even one night of reading for first 7 years of her life.

I just love reading i love to get lost in a book it is one of my favourite past times.
I also enjoy reading to my children although only the youngest likes me to read to him now. I just love seeing the expression on his face when he listens to the story. It is a great way of interacting with my children. I spent many happy hours reading to my children but so far only my 17 year old has inherited my love of reading.

I also love reading aloud to children in addition to read to adults. It is really gratifying. I remember reading to my aunt's god daughters two little ones and their little friends, and I enjoyed the dramatic voices I made just as much as they did. I also am an adament writer of my own fiction and poetry of which I share with my family members and friends. I often sit down with them and read my poetry aloud.

Actually, Keola12, I too quite enjoy just reading aloud in general, not just to children. It is just a little more pleasureable to children.

I think it's very important to become involved with reading with your child.
It gives time to bond also. My son loves Junie B Jones little brother series.
My daughter likes Goosebumps books. So its important around our house to read and visit the Library when possible.
