I have been thinking about this question for a while now and I do read alot of animals book when I was young and it did not mention anything about it. It's so easy for me to step on my cats tail, I did not do it on purpose but she always walks beside me and it's hard to look after her tail XD and I will ask why she have a tail if it's useless?

It's really amusing question.. So you read a lot of books and they didn't tell you that a cat has tail, or something else? I think they get something like sense of direction... not sure about it, it's their whiskers perhaps. Keep searching, and if you don't get it, I hope your cat will not get its tail cut

Cats have tails for balance. That is why they can walk on such thin objects and don't fall on their heads or side. It's also what helps cats land on their feet. Because they are so soft and snuggly that they love to rub it around the things they love, like their human pets. Wow, it's amazing that cats consider us their pets too.

Yeppers!! Cats use their tails for balance. Their tails also help to guide them when they are falling. have you ever wondered why cats always tend to land on their feet? Its because of their tails.

Cats have tails mostly to use for balance when walking on high narrow places and to help them change direction when running fast. Cats also use their tail for communication. You can tell a lot about a cat's mood or frame of mind by the way they move their tail, cat body language.

Wel lnot all cats have tails. The Manx cat from the Isle of Mann doesn't have a tail.
I was told that cats have tails to help them balance with while climbing etc and that when they are cross they wave there tails. Strange as dogs wave there tails when they are happy.
