What is the best way to create the 'smokey-eyed' look?

I usually use a combination of black liquid and pencil eyeliner (both waterproof) and for extra effectiveness I like to use a bit of eyeshadow too. How do you create that look? And how do you make sure it stays, rather than running down ur eyes after about an hour???

I used to use eyeliner but now I just use powder eyeshadow usually a smoky grey colour as my eyes can't take black it makes them look too small. The smoky grey goes with my grey blue eyes perfectly too.

I used to use blue all the time but a friend said try grey and it works much better and I never buy any blue eyeshadows at all now.

I think that the smokey-eyed look is usually attained by use of both liner and eyeshadow in deep colors and with dramatic effect. If you are interested in learning more about how to apply eye makeup to attain this effect, I highly recommend that you search for makeup tutorials on youtube. A number of people have posted video makeup tutorials that give you a step by step approach to how to get the smokey eyed look that you want, using the colors that you want, or that you decide to try after watching the tutorial. Although I do not really do a smokey eye, I always had difficulty doing the "outer v" look despite years of trying. I watched a tutorial on youtube where it was explained step by step and shown on the video in such a way that I can usually manage to do it myself.
