Do you find that you become more scared of things as you get older?

I got this idea partly because of another discussion I responded to regarding scary books. I realized that I can no longer read the horror and true crime books that I used to like reading in my teens and college years. The same holds true for movies; I was never a horror movie fan, but the other day I had to really gather my nerve together to go to a horror movie film festival, just to see a particular actor onscreen. When they began the films, I sat with my eyes partially covered, through a montage of horror movie clips that I just couldn't watch...even though I actually HAVE seen some of the movies! There are some ways of making it better though. For one, I never watch a horror movie in my room, preferably not even at my house. I think it is actually better watching them at the movies, although then I get laughed at when I jump! Also, watching them at the house of my friend who lives out in the boonies, where I then have to drive through miles of back roads with all trees and no lights, is a bad idea. In a way, it makes sense to be more afraid as you get older, especially of the sort of things that could actually happen. (That's why I can't read true crime books anymore...I realize it is not fiction, whereas perhaps when I was younger I didn't really think about it). I'm wondering if other people notice this too...

hmm.....yes now that you mention it, i think that is happening. But i think its mostly in part that as you get older, you realize what type of world your living in. & that your more aware. like you said with the true crime stuff, you now realize that those things CAN happen. or like, when you become a parent, you cant stand to listen to stories (on the news or whatever)of a child being hurt.

No not really i have found that as i grow older i have become less afraid of things. I feel that i have become a lot more braver and stronger. I am no longer afraid to face somethings that i would have never have had the courage to face when i was younger. I just love horror films and storys i haven't yet come across one that has really scared me.

I think this is what our parents meant by ‘young blood’. At that time, we would laugh it off not knowing its meaning. We were strong enough to tackle the worst fears of mind and body but now with maturity and knowledge, we are more aware of the dangers of the world and that makes us more cautious, more slow in our reactions.

I used to get scared with horror movies when I was a little bit young. But as I understood how it was made I don't get scared anymore And one thing more I don't want to watch scary or horror movies. As if I'm just fooling myself getting scared.I feel like wasting my time.As you grow older you would not spend your time getting scared anymore you know it is fiction it would do you no good.So I'd rather spend my time listening to music or watching concerts live or on television. That is what I've been doing.

In fact I was more scared when I was young, than what I am now. Because, when I was young, I was inexperienced, and yet to understand the world and was dependent. Now I am independent, I know what life is, what is good and what is bad and enjoying my life a lot. So I will say I would say right now, I am just opposite to this topic title. However, there are certain situations in life where we get more scared. For example, I would get more scared when the member of my family of friend is sick, etc.

I just love watching horror movies and all things scary! I love reading horror books too! For me it's just another form of escapism! I love to escape into the world of horror, I don't think that there's anything to be frightened of although I must admit, some of those movies can be pretty graphic! I love those movies where they are totally silent and then all of a sudden there's a tremendous noise and your heart leaps into your mouth! That makes a great horror movie for me. Andrew

No, I have never been afraid of much, especially when is comes to books and movies instilling fear. As I have learned more about the world and lived in "less" safe places I have become more cautious which is not the same as fear. But I can still watch horror movies, etc. just like I always have without getting scared.

When we were in our teens, we were carefree and enjoyed everything that came our way, including horror movies and books. Life was just one big party of laughs and fooling. As we grew up, we learnt the hard lessons of life, saw the ups and downs, saw horror at its worst in life, so now as we age, we have seen so much of life in its true colours that wanting to see a horror movie or book makes you tremble. Thats why funny movies or romantic ones are so much more popular with people as they grow up. Keep smiling. It happens all the time.

I may be an exception because I am not scared at all and I don't scare easy. The thing is, I never cared for scary or horror movies. I don't get my thrills that way. Cheers!!

In contrast I have become stronger and braver and bolder now that I've reached my golden age. Not of those things that I usually dread before would scare me to date. I don't even get horrified with horror movies anymore now that I know they are only make believe and could not really happen in real life. I am not even afraid of the dark of of being alone now than I used to be when I was younger. This is because I know that I have nothing to be afraid about. I know I am safe in the arms of Jesus and He is always by my side to keep me safe and secure.

I was never a fan of horror movies or books, but I have read a few in my life, some make sense and they are interesting psichologicly to the human mind. I love Stephen King He is brilliant! it scares the hell out of me but I will read it any way! What I DON'T like is those senseless movies or books about killing just for the sake of it, is not entertainig not funny, and a waste of time.

No!I am not scared of,but I am getting bored of watching horror films and reading real life crime stories. Most probably, they are exaggerating things in such types. When I was young, I used to read horror or crime issues just to discuss or narrate to my friends. To be in the centre of attraction,I used to collect more details of a scenario. But now,I just avoid them and skip to nice things.
