hi Everybody,
I'm looking for some help with my husband health problems.
He was admitted to hospital 3 weeks ago with high blood pressure,200 over 140.
What they found scared us a lot he has congestive heart failure, there was fluid around his heart and in his lungs, his blood was too thick and the blood vessels to narrow. After they stablised his blood pressure they did tests on his kidneys. He has only 30% kidney function. The doctors have him a a lot of different medicine, one being a durectic, he has lost 10kgs of fluid!!
What I am wondering about is diet. I know that salt and caffine are out and the doctor mentioned a low protien diet. We live in Japan so things like tofu are easy to get but I have never really thought about vegetarin diet before. How to make things tasty without salt or using stock cubes? Also he can't have to much liquid so things like soups or stews would not be very often.
Has anybody had an experience like this? Any advice, not just diet wise but also anybody who has recovered from this kind of thing what did you find helpful?
My husband is only 47 years old, doesn't smoke or drink, eats kind of healthy, although recently a lot of chocolate so this has really shuck us up!!
Thanks in advance for any help.

That is an exceptionally high blood pressure readiong and the doctors will give your husband medication to reduce it slowly to an acceptable level. If they allow his blood pressure to drop too fast then he is at a risk of having a stroke, so it will take a litte while and then they will probably monitor him to make sure it does not rise again or fall too low.
They will also give him something to thin his blood as that will take some of the pressure off his heart. The same with fluid retention and the duretic will help him keep that problem under control too.
These medical conditions do not just happen but instead build up over a period of time and often people are unaware of them because the changes are gradual rather than a sudden change. I am sure that the doctors explained that to your husband plus the fact that he might need to lose weight and exercise. With the exercise, walking is good because a person can walk for as long or as short a distance as they like. If your husband is not used to walking then initially he is probably better off walking a short distance and then back again. He can repeat that as often as he likes because if he gets tired, he is not a long way from home.
The only potential problem is the smog/pollution there in Japan but maybe were you live the air is clean. With the diet, check on the internet for recipes as there are a whole range of them for you to choose from. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables as they are excellent and goodfor you as well. I would avoid the stock unless you have made it yourself as often it is very salty and salt is one ofthe things that should not be in the diet. Instead try using different herbs and spices to flavour your meals as they will be much better.
Good luck to both you and your husband, and think positively abouy the future you can enjoy together. With good medical care, taking his medications, doing some exercises and a good diet, he wil be okay I am sure.

Thank you for your reply.
I think that he has had high blood pressure for a long time. He said that even in high school his blood pressure was high.
We are lucky we live in the countryside. Just a 5 minuete drive to the mountains, we own land that we can walk around. Also our four kids and two dogs will make sure that he will get exercise.
You are right about the fruit and vegeatables, I am planning on trying to grow some vegetables from next year, a bit more organic than the stuff in the supermarket.
Again thank you for the reply.
