- Choose a personal identification number (PIN) that's not your phone number, home address, or birthdate.
- Memorize your PIN. In a third of all ATM card frauds, according to Citibank, the PIN was written on the card or somewhere in the wallet.
- Never put your PIN on a deposit slip, envelope, or postcard.
- Check all ATM receipts against bank statements.
- Never lend your cards to anyone or leave cards lying around the house.
WHEN YOUR ATM CARD IS STOLEN
- Report the theft right away. If you report the card missing before it's used, some banks will not hold you responsible for unauthorized withdrawals.
- Keep checking your statements even after you have reported your card missing. If you find any suspicious charges, write your bank listing each one. Include your account number, the date stolen, and the date reported.
WHEN MOVING TO A NEW ADDRESS
- Call the bank to advise them of your new contact information to avoid delay of account statement delivery.
