Do You Love Ready Meals? You know! The Good Old Microwave Job!!

Ready Meals! They are a big part of my life and I have come to rely on them! They are so convenient and very quick. I just shove one in the microwave, a spaghetti bolognese or a ham taglitele, absolutely beautiful! I don't survive on them obviously but they are always there whenever I feel lazy and tired and I cannot be bothered to mess around in the kitchen! I heard on the news that this is what you get when you get old! There's the wheels on meals service which distributes frozen ready meals to the old folk, not bad! It's so easy, you just punch a couple of holes in the film at the top and away you go! Are you having a ready meal tonight? Andrew

I tend to have too many jobs, so I have to grab a meal quickly. I like good canned soups, and I do warm them up in the microwave. I also like things like tuna steaks that come seasoned and fully cooked in a little pouch.

Yes, ready meals are so convenient! They have been a great help to me when I have had to rush off to college, there's no time to cook then! I wouldn't say that I eat out that much though. I guess I love the occasional KFC or McDonalds! Andrew

Hi, rice is good for you anyway, I suppose I should eat more rice myself. It sounds like to you have a good plan all the same! Andrew

That's quite surprising! I too thought that the US would be a major player as regards ready meals! I love my occasional ready meal, so quick, so convenient and I'm not sure how I would live without them! Welcome to My Lot by the way and congratulations on making your first post. Andrew

I moved to the U.S. from the U.K. a few years a go and there is a considerable difference between ready meals available in the two countries. In the U.K. I had access to every type of ready meal imaginable! They even have entire stores, such as Waitrose and Marks and Spencer, devoted to high quality ready meals. Even the less expensive supermarkets such as Tesco have an extensive range of fresh ready meals. While there are ready meals in the U.S., they do not come close to what is available in the U.K. in terms of variety and freshness. I am surprised that this has not caught on on the U.S. considering the value Americans tend to put on convenience. I think it is a market just waiting to be tapped into.

Sorry my friend I have to strongly disagree with you on this one! I hate ready meals in fact I detest anything microwaved, I don't own a microwave and probably never will, I have had a few meals in the past my ex has given me in the microwave, never ever again! It has a horrible taste to it and it's not always just the food, to me microwaving food is not proper cooking. I would much rather go without than have anything microwaved! I'll eat cereal, sandwiches, fruit anything but cook in a microwave, so not for me my friend. Has to be cooked in the oven or eaten cold, never microwaved!

Hi wolfie. I don't mind ready meals although I have to say, my life doesn't revolve around them. I too love hot cooked meals like yourself! I tend to become extravagant as regards cooking at the weekends and I really indulge myself then with a nice cooked meal. I guess I tend to cook a lot of pasta which is quite healthy. I'm not that good though when it comes to eating fruit. I must try and improve in that area. Andrew

I have eaten them. They are handy and economical, but they are certainly not the same as homemade. Right now my "fast food" is a microwaved potato with whatever I have left over as a topping. Chili and cheese is really very good. Frozen veggies microwave really well, and believe it or not, so do eggs. I do really enjoy having a microwave and the convenience it provides.

Now you are making me hungry!! I just love a microwaved potato and I love to cover it in beans as well as cheese, very nice! The invention of the microwave was a wonderful thing and I will probably come to rely on the microwave when I am old and grey! Andrew

I can't afford ready meals on our food budget but I do make my own ready meals up for the freezer so if there is not a lot of time I cam pull a meal out of the freezer and re heat it. Some ready meals do taste nice and some don't.

That's a good idea as regards storing food in the freezer. I don't do this at all but perhaps I should. I guess pasta is good for this! I should cook lots and lots of pasta at the weekend and then store it in the freezer ready for the coming week. Andrew

Yes, I especially love those rice and pasta packages! Toss them into the microwave and make a quick salad. One complete meal. Last week, though, I finally bought a crock pot so I'm having fun with that too! Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

Well, do what I do. I buy what's called 'Salad in a Bag'. That makes for a very nice salad and if you feel a bit energenic you can always buy extra vegetables to put in the salad as well :) Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

I guess everyone feels differently about ready meals. I love them but I don't have them on a daily basis! In actual fact, I have just finished a ready meal for lunch and I will be having another one this evening. I have to attend college this evening and so I don't want to spend any longer in the kitchen than I have to! Andrew

How i wish i could. Sometimes i get so lazy to do the cooking that i wish i could just do what you are doing but i can't. If it is just me and my girls and my father then i could do that. But i still, look after my sister's family, she is gone now and they have no one to look after them.Though, it is just the cooking that i do for them. How i wish i could serve them ready meals.

I admire you for what you are doing! I guess things would be a little easier if you could offer them a ready meal from time to time but it certainly doesn't beat a home cooked meal! I tend to indulge in home cooked food at the weekends. Still, good luck and I'm sure you are doing an excellent job. Andrew

I agree with you on the preservatives thing and I don't think that they are that healthy either. However, I do like to stick a ready meal into the microwave when I don't have much time to cook. I personally go for the spaghetti bologese ready meals myself! Andrew

I'm not a fan and they're not really as cheap here in the Philippines. The lunch-promo meals from fast food restaurants that are so accessible are just as cheap. But I guess I do know what you feel about loving food that you can just pop in the microwave and is ready for serving - I guess that's why my mom would send me left over meals packed nicely in microwaveable plastics :) Thanks for the response on my discussion!

The ready made meals tend to be high in salt and fat, so unless you buy the diet ones it is not a healthy alternative to real food. I do use them occasionally like you do when short of time, not feeling well or just lazy. What I do is say cook a roast or chicken and will eat for a few days, but the remainder goes in the freezer in individual portions. I will do that for mashed potatoes too accasionally. A bag of frozen veggies is fairly cheap so I do that on the stove top, it takes about ten minutes overall. Thus I microwave the meat and potatoes, cook the frozen veggies and I have a quick meal as fast as any premade and I control the salt. I also cook rice enough for two days. On the bed of rice you can put some vegetables and a few pieces of meat, could be anthing and use my favorite sauce over all.

It sounds like you have a really good plan! I have never tried freezing stuff in advance and having food left over for the next few days! I suppose the good thing would be to do this at the weekends and take the food out during the week as and when I needed it. Andrew

i think ready meals are usually less healthy right? i mean it's all processed and all the preservatives that goes into it. On that note, over here in asian countries, we have the instant noodles which is a really popular type of food. it only takes 3mins to prepare( by just pouring hot water and waiting). It actually tastes really yummy but also unhealthy, cause it contains a lot of MSG.

I guess ready meals can be quite unhealthy, that's why I don't have them on a daily basis. I do like to cook from time to time even though I do live alone. There are so many preservatives and so forth but I tend not to think about them when I am indulging in a ready meal! Andrew

I wouldnt eat ready meals personally because of a number of factors. -In terms of our budget here, ready meals do not offer us very good value for money. I can buy much better ingredients for the same price as a ready meal. -They are not a very healthy option...whether it is salt content or fat content or destroyed vitamins & minerals. -I can produce healthy, tasty, filling meals in the same time as it takes to make a ready meal. -If you were to organise your cooking and freezing of foods during a month, for example, you could store plenty of meals that you can microwave for convenience and have the peace of mind that the meal is homemade and nutritious. -Packaging waste. I hate all that packaging that gets thrown in the bin and then thrown into landfill. The cost of a ready meal is much more than just money. Andrew....why not keep some ready cooked noodles in the fridge, some easy to cook vegetables such as mushrooms, suger snap peas, baby corns, onion, peppers etc, and some steak and in no time at all you can make a very very healthy stir fry. I guarantee it will take the same time to make as the ready meal and it will be so much better for you. If you take a look round, youll find lots of similar suggestions....and you might find yourself never buying a ready meal again :-))

I guess I don't have ready meals on a daily basis but I must admit, they are very convenient when you have to rush out and you don't have time to cook. That sounds like a good idea as regards cooking food before hand and freezing it. My problem is, I only have a very small icebox at the top of my fridge! Still, we are in a new year now and I'm trying to change my diet. Welcome to My Lot by the way. Andrew

In a country like ours wherein we relish hot freshly prepared food, there is a considerable mindset issue against the readymade concept. Although it is catching on in some of the larger cities and towns people still have the tendency to go out and eat instead of going for the ready made meal. I for one have indulged in them very rarely.

It depends on what it is. Some I like, some I hate, and others I love. I bought a shrimp scampi Microwave TV dinner the other night and paid just $1.25 for it. It was delicious. Next best thing to Red Lobster. I will definitely buy it again!

I can understand where you are coming from. Frozen meals and ready to go meals are pretty abundant these days aren't they? Well I guess you could call what I am serving tonight a real meal. I am making chicken and some other things along with it. Believe it or not we are going without a microwave in our house for now until we can afford one and it really hasn't hurt us too much by not having one. The microwave can come in handy to heat coffee though in which I miss doing.

As for me,I prefer cook fresh meals for my family at home and ready meals when I'm alone.I think sometimes it implies your attitude towards life and your character. And I think it is enjoyable to cook whatever you want and you'll feel happy to cook for someone you love.So if you have time, you can cook meals instead of eating ready meals,it's very funny and feel proud of youself when you eat what you have cooked.
