I'm watching Kind Corn (a documentary) where these guys decide to plant 1 acre of corn. After the corn grew-up, it was 5 tons of food!!!!
Makes me wonder why there are so many starving people in this world.

The reason why there are so many people starving in this world is money. If you don't have money, you can't buy and thus you can't eat. These 5 tons of food are meant for business and, if these guys are not charity-minded, they won't be handed out freely to the masses.

Wow that's a good past-time. As for the corn, yeah, rarely does a person grow a lot of crops or other food sources for private consumption. They need to be disposed of, hence, they are sold. Money, sadly, makes the world go round these days.

You're right! This corn was meant for business...it all went to feed livestock!
I should have really gotten further into the documentary (King Korn) before I posted this discussion, but I was so shocked!
I watch documentaries online through Netflix. It's the coolest thing EVER! I'm still on my 2-week free membership but I think I'm going to go with their $8.99 monthly plan so I can still get these movies online.

Because for esoteric economic reasons, often farnmers are paid either to not produce food or to let their food rot in the ground, especially in the US, although it probably happens elsewhere. I have never understood the arguments, which geneally have to do with trade deficits and tariffs and free (lol) trade, and are all calculated without any recourse to humanity.
There are many, and I am one, who believe that the world can easliy produce enough food to go around, but as long as we are caught in the belief that money is more important than human life, then there will always be starving people.

Well, five ton of corn may seem like alot but it is not. Also not every country can produce alot of corn. They may not have the right soil, tempertures to hot, or wild life eas most of it up.

Mostly because of climate in poorer countries and not enough education...plus companies and government either not doing enough or meddling. That's why hunger's such a problem in the world.
Anyway, five tons from one acre? I've a little more than an acre and am going to try be farming it as 2009 starts, I expected to get a decent amount..but five tons, wow. There's hope for my plan yet!

The crop they grew was corn and after all of the expense that they went through, they didn't make much money. In fact, they lost $19.
The corn they grew ended-up going to feed livestock and since we have so much livestock in this country, there's a lot of corn that is needed. It's a cheap crop to grow, but with all the supplies and machinery involved, it's a costly process. I highly recommend this movie, "King Korn" which if you have Netflix, you can watch it online. That's how I'm doing it.
Corn makes cows fat so the documentary went on to examine the quality of the meat we eat. These guys just wanted to plant some corn and the experiment went in a whole different direction.

I'll see if I can get to watch it ^_^ it's always interesting to see the fundemental ways corn's apart of our lives in this country.
I don't intend to grow feed, but food. If my plants are very happy, I can sell a bunch of fresh produce and such and hopefully for fairly cheap. No machinery's gonna be involved, and we have a well here, so there won't be water costs...and even then I intend to use dishwater and as much rainwater as I can gather...(compost out of plant matter, from banana peels to grass cuttings). And all my seeds, and I've a good amount of them, were bought for dollar each, so the initial cost is very low and the cost for turning it into something profitable will just be all the work I put into it.
I expect there will be losses to accompany the gains, but this'll be my first year...it's expected if I'm gonna turn it into something of a long-term thing.
Still, the idea that you can use one acre and et five tons of product in farming...even if was a bit industrialized, really bightens my expectations!
Thanks for posting a discussion on food awareness, dearie! More people definitely need to read up more on it, as well as watch a documentary or two.

My Dad gardens and even in a 1 acre garden you wouldn't believe the amount of food that is grown. I think the starving ppl situation is more to do with not getting the food to the ppl needing it rather than there isn't food to give them.
