I don't mean to be rude.....

Why do people say that when they so clearly do mean to be rude? No one is buying it? "I'm not being funny" is another, no,you are right, you're not being funny. "I don't mean to pry", don't then. Do phrases like this bug you? Can you think of any more? Why do people say these things?

People say "I don't mean to be rude" because now-a-days people are so sensitive and they don't want to run the risk of offending them. For example, if you're trying to do something and someone tries to start a conversation, yet they are going on about absolutely nothing, you would say "I don't mean to be rude, but I'm kind of in the middle of something." That way they know to leave you alone with out you having to say "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!"

There are alot of phrases like that. I think people say them because they think its polite. of course a lot of times it isn't.

Yeah I hate that too. I usually just roll my eyes sometimes and tell them to keep their comments to themselves cause it's none of ya business. Lol.

Are we speaking of someone trying to give constructive criticism or someone really meaning to be rude? I know sometimes people can't handle hearing the truth so if I am having to tell the person something that is honest but I know they may take it the wrong way I will say something like "I am not trying to be mean but..." Really I am not trying to be mean but help them.
