"The children of the SUPERNATURAL BEINGS who had married these women became famous heroes and warriors. They were called NEPHILIM and lived on the earth at that time and even later." Genesis 6:2 (Contemporary English Version) What are your thoughts on this strange passage?

I have no idea of the passages before or after but from that one statement I think it is saying that some demi-gods screwed around with some mortals to make heroes.

According to some, these demi-gods were actually the fallen ANGELS! It is also said that the book of Enoch was banned from becoming part of what we know today as the bible, because it gives reference to this. Some believe that even Jude 1:6-7 and Genesis 3:15, gives credence to this train of thought. Thanks...

Fallen angels took human wives for themselves. These fallen angels did not tell the humans what they really were, but said they were actually gods. Their hybrid children were the nephilim, who were giants, not all in the large sense although some were. But in their abilities, strength speed, etc. these were the famous men and women of old. Hercules, perseus and such. They were part of satans plan to stain the natural blood line of naturual men forever. But almost all were wiped out through Noahs floods Goliath was said to be the last of them. take care. Rastafari!!

Another translation runs: "Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." It raises a number of questions. What is meant by 'the sons of God'? They were, apparently, of a different race from yet fertile with 'the daughters of men'. It doesn't actually say that the Nephilim were the 'sons of God', notice, only that they were on earth at that time and afterwards (though some people infer that the progeny of the Sons of God and the Daughters of Men were the Nephilim. The word 'Nephilim' seems to derive from a word meaning 'to fall'. Whether it means 'fallen angels/people' or 'people [i.e. heroes] whom one could fall for' seems to be unclear. I rather like the Ethiopian rationalisation of the story in The book called The Conflict of Adam: "Certain wise men of old wrote concerning them, and say in their [sacred] books, that angels came down from heaven, and mingled with the daughters of Cain, who bare unto them these giants. But these [wise men] err in what they say. God forbid such a thing, that angels who are spirits, should be found committing sin with human beings. Never, that cannot be. And if such a thing were of the nature of angels, or Satans, that fell, they would not leave one woman on earth, undefiled... But many men say, that angels came down from heaven, and joined themselves to women, and had children by them. This cannot be true. But they were children of Seth, who were of the children of Adam, that dwelt on the mountain, high up, while they preserved their virginity, their innocence and their glory like angels; and were then called 'angels of God.' But when they transgressed and mingled with the children of Cain, and begat children, ill-informed men said, that angels had come down from heaven, and mingled with the daughters of men, who bare them giants." Many traditions (not just Jewish/Eastern ones) have stories that suggest that supernatural beings mated with humans and produced children. Some modern writers have taken this up and have tried to make factual assumptions that some alien race actually visited this earth and mated successfully with humans. Considering the fact that human matings with species as genetically close to us as chimpanzees and gorillas have never been reliably recorded, it seems highly unlikely that any alien race (which presumably evolved, as we did, from single celled life) could ever have a fertile union with our race. A more rational explanation would be that some theological or philosophical tenet is being explained in a metaphorical way as a 'myth'. Most of mythology has a metaphorical meaning (or did so originally).

GREAT INFO! Notice in the bible too, where Satan is counted amongst those who are called 'The Sons of God": Job 1:6; 2:1. And Angels are referenced to as being the "Sons of God". Job 38:7 and Luke 20:36. Thanks...

some people think that the Nephilim were aliens. and they could possibly be so. even after the great flood that took place which supposedly left Noah and his family alive, the Nephilim were still around too. It's written in the bible. for me personally, i don't know what to think. mainly because i've heard lots of different people's opinions on this. Others believe them to be like what the other myLot user suggested, Demi-gods. giants also existed. like the one David had to fight, Goliath
