I got a "reading injury"!

I know that sounds silly, but this really happened. I rarely do this, but the other night I started reading a novel that I ended up liking so much that I literally couldn't put it down. I stayed up all night and finished the entire thing. The book was "The Bone Garden" by Tess Gerritsen. It was a hard cover and I don't know if I was holding it in a strange way or what, but I became aware when I still had several pages left that the forefinger of my left hand was sore. It made sense since I had been reading for over four hours, maybe six. But when I was finally finished and I went to bed, my finger REALLY hurt, severely. It was swollen, and I could still feel the pain even if I left it lying straight on the pillow and not moving it. I finally got up and took a naproxen tablet and put some ice on it. After sleeping for 8 hours it still hurt, but now another day later it's okay. But there you have it, I got a "sports injury", from reading. LOL! The book was great though, I definitely want to read more Tess Gerritsen.

LOL, that is worse than when I got a Wii injury! At least that's some activity. I guess I could say I've gotten reading injuries before though. If you can count reading until you have a headache and throwing up. Or a migraine should count for something.

I used to really hurt my thumbs with the old Nintendo System because it has those rectangular controllers with hard corners.

My Wii injuries have all been from not looking at where my arm is at before I swing and hitting something in my way. But I do remember those old controllers. Although I mostly played computer games back in those days.

That's the first time I ever heard of a reading injury, but I can certainly sympathize. I guess my worst outcome from too much reading is missing several hours of sleep when I can't put a book down. I also prefer paperbacks when I have a choice. Those hardcover books can really be dangerous, especially the big ones. I just started rereading Stephen King's The Stand. It's the complete, uncut version, and I hate to think what it would weigh in hardcover. It's a monster -- over 1100 pages. Take care next time. You need to remember to change the position of your hands.

I prefer paperbacks too, and now this is just another reason why!

Yes that happens. I had that happen to me before but the next day it felt better. I hope you feel better too. Sometimes the book is so good it is hard to put it down.

I don't mean to laugh over your pain or your injury. But wow lol! I can't believe you actually hurt your finger over reading a book. But that's great! How many of your friends can say that. That they got injured over reading a book. I'm sure they'd get a big kick out of it too. Thank you for the laugh today and try to limit your reading of Tess Gerritsen to the min. so you don't hurt you finger again. Or maybe restrain yourself from keeping on reading. :)

That must of been an excellent book. I am sorry your finger got hurt though. I type a lot with one finger (yes I am Lazy and I can use both hands) and sometimes if I have been on here all day my finger gets really sore also. I am really glad your finger is getting better. I am going to get a copy of that book you where reading but I will make sure I change the position of my hands and fingers often. Take care.

Haha, that's funny. Usually my only injuries obtained from reading are extreme exhaustion and inability to concentrate on the "real world".

Passion is pain? Well that's cool that you have a thing for this author, and glad your finger is better. I don't think I've ever had this happen to me but if I am holding the book in my hands without any support for my arms or elbows, my arms grow tired, but then I move position.

Once I hurt myself reading because I was reading a hardcover book while laying down. But then my grip slipped and I dropped the book on my face. The edge of the hard cover book hit my face and I got a cut on my nose. It was pretty embarrassing because afterwards everyone kept asking me what happened.
