Left-Handed Student

Can you believe guys, my kid's 1 st grade teacher always forces her left-handed student to write with his/her right hands? And all the teachers, including the principal, are agree with that? When I protested, she said "Well, may be in West country (I think she meant US, and European's countries) left-handed is acceptable. But here, for we have East tradition, it is not." I explained that left-handed is not a handicap, that left-hended people seems to be more creative and smart, for they use their right brain. And it will not be fair for the student, being forced to use his/her right hand. But the teacher did not listen. If the student was my kid, I ll definitely go to a better school, that let it's left-handed student use his/her left hand. What a teacher!!!

I can understand your frustrations. However, there is a reason why the school want to train the student to use their right hand. It's because our writing are designed for the right-handed way. It's just like the guitar, most of them are default for right handed people, only very little are custom made for the left handed people. Similarly, it would be easier to write the words using the right hand. I am not suggesting that your kids should adopt this way, but I just want to explain the reason behind why some schools are 'forcing' their students to write with right hand. For me personally, I don't think it's a problem to use left hand in school. Some of my friends were doing it, even though we are 'encouraged' to use the right hand. And those who are left-handed, have been doing great in their study as well. If I can go back to school time, I would prefer to train both of my hand to write. I have met a teacher who can do this. We were amazed by his ability to write with either side of his hand. I believe his left and right brain are well trained equally

I am not frustrated. It wasn't my son who's left-handed and was forced to use his right hand. It was other student, and I was happen to know it. Why did I protest? Cause I'm concern with children education. Well, I just can't take the Eastern traditon as the reason, for it did not make sense for me. It made the student became not comfortable with him self, felt different (and probably weird) in "negative" term. And, I believe it hurts him for hurting is not just a matter of slaping!!! One question, If you were a teacher, would you do that?

Well I see, I am sorry that I mistaking the situation. Then it's your children's friend that has the concern. Well, the education in the Eastern countries had been molded for a long time in such a way that, strict rules are to be followed. I do not agree on this as well, because it's limiting the new generation creativity, although it might be efficient in keeping the school children organized and disciplined. I think the children should be given the freedom to choose which hand to be used for writing. If I am teacher, I will encourage all of them to write with both hands. Then it should achieve balance utilization of our left and right brain.

I had that same problem when my daughter was in Kindergarten. She is left handed and the teacher kept trying to get her to write with her right hand. I told her to let use her left hand if that is what she was more comfortable with. Why confuse her? There's nothing wrong with being left handed in my opinion.

I don't think this is fair. Left-handed or right-handed for as long they can write I find no big issue at all. I believe each one is entitled to use the hand that he find more convenient to use for writing. My hubby is left handed and yet he could write far more beautifully and neatly than the others who are right-handed. My twin grandchildren are 3 years old but I noticed them preferring to use their left hand even if I tried so many times to encourage them to use their right hands. So instead of giving them a hard time I just allowed them to go on using their left hand. It is no big deal to me. As long they learn how to write they can use whatever hand they prefer. It is therefore not fair for teachers to force any student. It is not a matter for any teacher of any school to decide which hand should be used for writing.

wow..i don't think is fair to force people to write on a specific hand. Since it is not going to matter much to the person's life or future and there is no rule that needs to only write with right. both hands should be equal!

I don't find that to be right its like forcing someone who knows how to skateboard left foot forward to skate right foot forward. everyone starts with whatever hand/side is more comfortable. The problem is that most stuff is made for the right handed person. Emergeny break, shifter, ect. Ive seen some interested left-handed stores though. But every country has their own sacred traditions.

It maybe a tradition however it can be very distressing to a child to be forced to use a hand which does not seem natural to them, id say no matter how good the school was that would be enough for me to remove my child and seek a place in a different school for them. While we all want the best education possible for our children we also want them to enjoy school and be happy there learning to write can be difficult for some as it is why add further stress to the child just for a tradition, to me a tradition should be respected however not at the expense of my childs happiness.

Well I'm left-handed, and I don't think theres anything wrong with me, I'm smart, I'm not handicap, and we are in our right minds..lol. I do get tired of people teasing me about using the wrong hand all the time, and our world is set up for right handed people, but I don't think there is anything wrong with being left handed, thats just what makes us all different and unique. I think this school was wrong in forcing the child to use their right hand, if your left handed and you try to use your other hand, its awkward and it feels funny, and it makes you feel clumsy, I know it does me.

Hello , I think a child should use what ever hand he wants to use . I know right handed seems more commom and i think there are more right handed people out there . I like the sound of southpaw and how rare it is or how a left handed pitcher in baseball is much wanted I think its odd that the teacher and everyone else would be ok with this . They dont care where i am from at all .

I don't think that is right. My daughter is left-handed, but writes just like a right handed person. She used both hands when she went to Kindergarten. Her teacher told us she would encourage her to use only one hand to write and it didn't matter which she used, so she chose her left hand. I think it would hinder a child when you try to make them change the hand that they are more comfortable with. Being left-handed doesn't make you less a person. They just do things with a different hand that those that are right-handed. I think the teacher and the country are wrong! More emphasis should be put on succeeding in school rather than which hand a child writes with.

Why not let the child use both hands and become ambidextrous?

If I am the parent of that child I will feel very disappointed because they are treating my child like a handicapped and forcing him/her to use the right hand. I mean it is very irrational forcing a child to use only a right hand in writing. If it is the fine motor skill that the child adopted they should not force a child to use the right hand. And the negative effect on that, the child will develop an insecurities and inferiority for being a left-handed where nothing should be insecure about... They should not be so shallow minded with regards on which hand the child is using for writing...

is she a teacher or a butcher? all the left hander's work are controlled by the right brain and the rt handers work by the left brain. one must not for a person to change his or her way of writing... once i read in a magazine stating that all such practices leads to brain haemorrhage. it is totally absurd forcing a left hander to do like this...

Left handed people seem to excel in language. Both my Dad and daughter are left handed. My daughter self taught herself the basic Japanese scripts at 3 years old and is reading in both Japanese and English above her age level. My MIL said I should force her to use her right hand by holding her left hand when she writes or eats etc. I won't write what I told MIL to do. My daughter starts school next year, I know that some of the teachers accept left handiness and some don't so I will have to see what happens then. As for it being an Eastern traditon, I think that comes from the fact that the left hand was used for the toilet before toilet paper. I either read that or saw it on TV, not sure. But if that is the case then it is understandable. Maybe you should ask why it is an eastern traditon. My Mom always told me that the devil sits on your left shoulder so if you spill salt you through it over your left shoulder to blind the devil. I guess that is why left handiness wasn't accepted until recently. Jacks

I think that Teacher is not doing right at all. In earlier times; stigma might have been attached with Left-Handedness. However;it is not a bad thing in Modern Times. There are many successful people in Asian Countries too who are openly Left-Handed. Foremost is Amitabh Bacchan ;the Indian Superstar who writes with his left hand and never hides this from public. I feel that the Teacher should not force the student(s) to write with right hand . Regards -Sweety_81

Western language is also made to be written with the right hand. For supposedly educated people they are acting pretty stupid. I ran into that too but when they saw how badly I wrote with my right hand and how well I could write with my left they left me alone. When forcing someone to write with the non-dominant hand they never excel using that hand and can develop psychological problems and stuttering. What is is with all those stupid right handed people who think their way is the only way. It just gets me mad.

wow, so i take it you live in the eastern part of the world. i'm left-handed and none of my teacher ever told me to switch to my right. i'm from South East Asia, Singapore to be particular. yup, left handers are supposed to be more creative because they use their right brain. I always thought right handers should be more smart though, because the left brain is the part that is associated with logic
